Concerned about my DS’s development

My baby is 6 months old and can sit up with support, but not on his own. He has rolled from front to back about five times ever (more by accident than design) but has never rolled from back to front. He can roll onto his side in both directions.

When doing tummy time he will hold his head up high and can push his upper body upwards using his arms. He also moves his legs as if trying to crawl but doesn’t actually go anywhere. After about 2-3 minutes he will start crying as he doesn’t enjoy being on his front.

When held under his armpits in the standing position he can bear weight on his legs for a couple of seconds before giving up.

He’s babbling and making lots of different sounds and spends ages grabbing and exploring toys in his baby gym.

Anyways, as an anxious first time mum I just wondered if this is all normal or if he’s a bit behind in his development? Also, how much time should I spend doing tummy time and other exercises to help him develop all these skills?

Basically I’m worried that I’m leaving him to play on his back too much, which he’s very happy doing, but it’s not helping him to progress and develop new skills.

Thanks.

He sounds perfect op! Enjoy your baby!!
Is recommend unsubscribing from BabyCentre or whatever app you're getting the 'milestones' info from. I swear they are designed to stress new mums out.

Are you sure? Shouldn’t he be rolling over both ways by now and also sitting in the tripod position on his own?

Op hes a baby, they are all different

I had one that walked at 9 months and one that was 14 months

Frlrlrubert · 28/10/2020 14:02

He sounds exactly where DD was at 6 months. She's never been a roller, and was ever so slightly late to sitting unaided.

She walked (just) before she was 11 months, and hasn't stopped since!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 28/10/2020 14:15

Sounds fine to me. My DS didn’t tripod sit until 7 months and toppled over regularly until 8 months. He didn’t want to put his feet down until he decided he wanted to walk.

mindutopia · 28/10/2020 14:21

All very normal sounding. Yes, many babies are rolling at this age, but it usually only starts around 4-5 months, so it's not like he is delayed in any way. Still very much in the normal range for everything. My first didn't babble until 9 months and definitely wouldn't have bared any weight on her legs and she was still considered perfectly normal.

FelicityPike · 28/10/2020 14:22

He’s fine.

MotherPiglet · 28/10/2020 14:23

Hes a baby op. Enjoy him, he sounds fine. Dont ruin this time worrying where hes so young.

Flatwhite32 · 28/10/2020 14:25

All very normal sounding! My DD didn't sit up properly til around 8 months (I was worried!) and always hated tummy time. She was in the 'black' for gross motor at her 10 month review, yet got up and walked at 13 months. She's 2 now and nursery say she's 'exceeding' on her physical milestones! Your DC's development sounds perfectly normal!

Whatthebloodyell · 28/10/2020 14:25

Babies do these things at different times. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the ones who do them later are ‘behind’.

BorderlineBob · 28/10/2020 14:27

This was me 6 months ago. Not with sitting and rolling but with other aspects of development. And honestly, the best advice I can give is just try not to worry. They will get there in their own time. He does not sound developmentally delayed. I wasted time worrying about what he wasn't doing yet and why he wasn't doing it and I didn't spend enough time just enjoying him.
Being a FTM is tough and can be a really anxious time but please try not to worry, he sounds fine and one day (probably very soon actually) you will look back and wish you hadn't spent so much time worrying Flowers

Trinpy · 28/10/2020 14:32

Yeah that's fine. One of my babies was never keen on rolling either - he could do it one way but rarely happened at all tbh. I remember watching him roll down a hill with some other kids when he was about 3 or 4 and thinking 'so you can bloody do it when you want to!!!' Grin. I also remember struggling to get him to sit up straight in his high chair and I weaned him at 6 months so he must have been similar to yours! He's grown up with no issues in development, physical or otherwise.

This by about a million!
AegonT · 28/10/2020 22:08

That sounds fine. Btw my daughter had a gross motor delay so sat and walked very late, she even saw a physio. It wasn't apparent at 6 months old. However she caught up and her other areas of development were fine - she was reading and writing before going to school.

aimzxd · 28/10/2020 23:57

My DS can sit unaided (10 months) but his balance is still dodgy if excited or trying to overreach. He learned to roll tummy to back around 4 months because he loathed tummy time, learned to roll back to front at 7 months but forgot how to roll back. He never pushed up on his arms till recently, always just arched his back on tummy to get up. He loved being on his feet and can support his weight indefinitely now, but balance is an issue. Everyones right, babies are different, they do things at different times. Enjoy.

Thanks everyone. Feeling reassured!
