Help feeding 7 week old

DS is 7 weeks old and bottle fed but only using my expressed breast milk, it's taking him over an hour to get through 4 or 5oz, he gulps at the bottle and manages 5 mouthfuls then is screaming in pain and arching his back with wind. He does bring the wind up with burping but then it's straight back to repeat the process. Feeding upright doesn't make much difference. Tried tommee tippee bottles and currently on MAM with the slowest flow teats.
He has mild cradle cap and has a red rash on his face and body which lasted wks 3-5 and seems to have cleared a bit but not fully - possible CMPA signs??
Doesn't seem to bring much milk up when he burps or anything and is putting weight on well but I just feel it might be something more than wind and being a newborn.
Any advice would be great, esp as I think I'll try to get to the GP this week and conscious of being fobbed off by them!

Are you doing paced bottle feeding?

doireallyneedaname · 26/10/2020 09:31

I’d get the rash checked out by the GP. As for the milk, it could be reflux if he’s coming off the bottle after a few gulps and crying. What’s he like with night feeds?

@Garman what is paced feeding? If you mean burping mid feed feed yes we do that

I’d get that rash checked out.

@doireallyneedaname his rash is almost gone on his body now that was at its peak, he's much better at night feeds, the evenings are the worst and mornings he's a bit fussy but afternoon/evening is awful. Is that an indication of something or just normal 'witching hour'?

Look up paced bottle feeding on YouTube, it's feeding the baby at a slower pace that they are in control of, rather than the old way we were all shown in the 80's/90's keeping the bottle up high with "no air" in it and no chance for the baby to take a breath or a break like they can do themselves when feeding at the breast.

I’d pop to the GP about the rash, also paced feeding is a bit more than just burping part way through and aims to mimic breastfeeding more and reduce some of the downsides of bottle feeding. www.mamanatural.com/paced-bottle-feeding/
You could try excluding dairy from your diet for a couple of weeks then reintroducing it to see if that makes a difference to symptoms.

Join the CMPA support Facebook group. My daughter is cmpa. Sounds like it's definitely a possibility, possibly also silent reflux. Add photos to the group, people are very helpful and experienced.
And yes expect to be fobbed off by GP - keep going back. It took us over 5 months with me going weekly and DD never sleeping more than 40min - then 1.5hr of screaming. She didn't have a rash and was EBF. Has been dairy free for over 6 years now.

Thanks everyone that's really useful I'll have a look at paced feeding and try the dairy free diet for me, might help me lose some weight too if I have to cut out the choc!!

The paced feeding has worked well so far today, the true test will be this evenings feeds but it's definitely made an improvement and he seems to be sleeping longer because he tired from working for it rather than just 45min sleeps 🙌

Brilliant Smile

If dairy free alone doesn't help you may also have to go soya free, approx 50% of cmpa babies also react to soya.
