Bottle feeding

Hello
After some advice. I know I’m gonna sound stupid now but I formula feed my 4 week old. We have a prep machine so really easy to make a bottle however what do I do when I take him out for the day? Just take a flask out and make the formula up with water from that? Only taken him out after a feed up to now so not had to think about it yet.

DS couldn’t drink the ready made ones. We replicated the Tommy tippee when we were out (flask for the hot shot, add powder, add cooled boiled water) easy enough and perfect temp.

@Twinkle19 I use Sainsbury’s own powdered formula and cow and gate ready made when out. The ingredients are the same. Might be worth checking if there is a ready made with the same ingredients as your powder

As for making them up I know it's not recommended now but I did it the old fashioned way. Emptied and refilled kettle, boiled it and left it to cool for 30 minutes to reach the correct temperature to make bottles, added the water then equivalent number of flat scoops of powder. Shook them well, then left to cool naturally at room temperature. When cool I stored them in the fridge, they can be kept for up to 24 hours. To warm up I used boiling water and a plastic jug (we had a flask that we filled with boiling water for going out).
I think it's so much easier than messing about making them as needed. And I know most people use the perfect prep machine but sorry to me that's laziness, you don't need a machine to make bottles in my opinion. I'd only ever make them the old fashioned way, regardless of what's recommended.

And I was never that keen on ready made because I found it thinner

Lockdownmummy · 27/10/2020 15:28

We use formula that doesn’t come in ready made as well and he whole thermos thing does seem like a faff but once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s really not that bad.

If you want to make in advance I would recommend looking up the Koo-Di Cooler which really does keep things fridge cold.

I used various methods depending on where we are going and he does have the odd ready made every now and again and it doesn’t appear to have any adverse effects.

I never heated up her bottles of formula. She had them at whatever temp they were when it was time for a feed, much easier.

And you can mix formula. We ysed aldis mamia for powder, and aptimil for ready made

Twinkle19 · 27/10/2020 16:11

Yeh we’re using the mamia formulae and the midwife said not to use any other now cos he will get a bad belly that’s why I haven’t just bought ready made bottles for when we’re out. Haven’t been out for long up to now and always gone out after a feed so not needed to feed him out yet.

Why would he get a bad belly? Odd advice.

Mamia and aptamil are literally identical, same as some of the other big brands, match up with other brands.

The midwives at hospital in Germany gave us a different brand of ready to feed every time we topped up. We continued switching based on what was available at the supermarket we happened to visit when we got home, and nothing bad happened :) I think the thing about not switching brands is marketing from formula companies, wanting brand loyalty...
