My 2 year old refuses his antibiotics.

Hi. I have just been given ibroprufen / paracetamol & amoxicillin for my son. He's had a temp on and off since yesterday now. He's thrown up, he keeps sticking his tongue out and crying his ears are bright red. So am guessing either tonsillitis or something else. He won't eat and I tried to give him his antibiotics but he spat it all straight back out. I had to literally throw the ibroprufen down his throat with syringe whilst he was crying which he then gagged on and I felt so awful but I just want to help him ease the pain abit. I don't no how to get the antibiotics down any suggestions?

I once had to give my two year old antibiotics every day for three months, so this is something I have a little experience in (it was bloody awful).

You can check with your local pharmacist whether you’re allowed to mix the antibiotics with icecream or yogurt. If you are, that might help persuade him.

We weren’t allowed to mix our particular antibiotics as we had to know how much he’d taken, so had to use the firm grip and directing the syringe at his cheek method. Sometimes offering a chocolate as a reward for taking it helped. Good luck x

in yoghurt?

How old is baby?

it may be that you just have to sneak a drop in at a time from the dose or hold him down and get it in. Not pleasant but might be the only way

oh, sorry, you said 2.

In yoghurt/ as a 'milkshake'

Followed by bribery e.g. a chocolate button

Syringe was the only way for us. Plus a “bribe” afterwards like a choc button

Syringes are brilliant things for medicine - if you do it quickly they hardly taste it and don’t fight as much. Follow it up with something immediately if possible e.g. a drink of milk or some yoghurt. Don’t let them see you getting it ready if you can avoid it, it gives them longer to work up and get stressed. Just brightly say “medicine time!” And in it goes straight away followed by something tastier.

Good luck OP, it’s not always easy, antibiotics taste foul!
