Does this look like a good highchair?

Do you think this looks like a good option for a highchair? It’s for my 6.5 month old who can’t sit unaided - will it offer him enough support? Also, do babies need shoulder straps? I don’t think this chair has that...

I did want the IKEA Antilop but can’t get delivery for ages - and want to start weaning tomorrow!

You might need a cushion to prop him up so he can sit upright- I find wooden ones tend to be a bit slippy on the bum.

I didn't strap mine in until she could climb out- figured if she choked I needed to get her out quick.

The Ikea one doesn’t have shoulder straps btw. It looks OK but you can’t pop it in the dishwasher like the Ikea one but the tray comes off which is good.

If you wanted the Ikea one then you can just feed your lo sitting in your knee until the new high tray arrives.

Whenever I used those wooden ones in cafes etc I found them to be rubbish to be honest, baby always slipped down in them! We had the Ikea one which is great. The only other one I’ve used at friends houses that I liked was the baby Bjorn one but it’s very pricey! You could have a look on Facebook marketplace for a second hand Ikea one, people are always selling them on for a few quid. And you can put it all in the dishwasher or give it all a good antibac clean!

Get the Antilop anyway Grin

EssentialHummus · 23/10/2020 12:25

Seriously, there are very few products with unanimous approval on here. There’s a good reason the Antilop gets so much love.

GreyishDays · 23/10/2020 12:26

Sit him on your knee for now, or use some other seat that you have?

icedaisy · 23/10/2020 12:27

Antilop is on Amazon with free delivery next week. I do have prime so might not be free without but still, next week.

ivftake1 · 23/10/2020 12:27

Get the IKEA one, or a Tripp trapp! You won't be disappointed with either!

I really mean that

VeggieSausageRoll · 23/10/2020 12:29

They always have these ones in restaurants and I hate them. Mine still slips and slides about in the wooden ones at 2 years old

suziedoozy · 23/10/2020 12:32

The other thing is the wood is so much harder to clean - the antilop is a breeze and every so often I just chuck it in the dishwasher.

5lilducks · 23/10/2020 12:37

I didn't want to get a wooden one for my DD as I thought it wouldn't be as comfortable as one that was padded, esp as we usually keep her in the highchair with some toys after meals, whilst I wash up etc. She needed to be comfortable in it. My one definitely needed straps as after a few months she started to climb out. In fact, with our first high chair, she used to be able to get out of the straps, and would then try and climb over. We finally got a Joie high chair and it is brillient. She can't get out of the straps and can't climb out either. It's seems very comfy as well and she can stay in there for awhile if needed.

EasyPeasyHappyCheesy · 23/10/2020 12:39

Is there a local selling site. I would say get the antilop second hand. Usually plenty going

jinglejangle6 · 23/10/2020 12:45

They’re about £10 pricier on Amazon but probably worth it to get it 10 days earlier!

Does the baby just sit on the plastic seat or do you need a cushion for their bum?

Only other option is to brave my local IKEA today - but I just don’t think I can face it!

Have a look on gumtree/Facebook- people are always selling the antilops and you can whack them in the bath with some bleach if you're worried about germs.

Honestly, it's the best high chair there is. I've got three young children so have tried lots at cafes/restaurants and friends houses and have never found a better one.

mistermagpie · 23/10/2020 13:29

There is an inflatable cushion for their back and sides but they sit on the plastic. It's fine.

Really? I’m thinking I will need the cushion as DS can’t sit up unassisted yet!

By the way, what age do children use highchairs until?

My 2 year and 8 month old is still in his Tripp trapp.
soffiee · 23/10/2020 14:22

The wooden ones my DS 18 months finds them very uncomfortable despite only using them in restaurants. I would be careful with these especially at 6.5 months old they have delicate backs and look uncomfortable. I got mine from mamas and papas for roughly the same price but it's secure, comfy and properly padded with great straps. DS could sit in this for ages when he eats but in the wooden ones we tend to find them in restaurants, he gets very uncomfortable and whiny when sitting in one and he is much older than your child!

jinglejangle6 · 23/10/2020 19:10

Thanks again for the input. I braved IKEA this afternoon and got an Antilop highchair! Smile

Oh yes, I didn’t consider the lack of footrest @FizzingWhizzbee123! I see there are lots of footrest options you can buy on Etsy though to fit the Antilop chair - I may do that if needed.
