Question re wool soakers, longies etc

Hi nappy experts, !!

I've just bought some longies and have decided I love these but verrry expensive.

Question is, If I make my own, do you have to have particular patterns or can you use any wollen trousers pattern?
Also, I'm assuming wool has to be 100% pure?

If I use a lanolising solution, is this enough to "waterproof " them after just one use?

Thank you. x

Look Here lots of free patterns and advice - not sure about the lanolin , there's probably instructions on the bottle and yes it does have to be 100% wool(try merino)

anyone know about the lanoliser please?

I have the disana one in a bottle, I've treated my trousers once. Is this enough?

Ha ha, i found it! you need to redo it about every three weeks or when you get leaks , according to a couple of sites i checked, wash by hand and press the excess water out first.
A tip i found on both sites was to use a blob of lansinoh and a few drops of baby shampoo dissolved in really hot water as your lanolising solution - should be cheaper and easier to get hold of IMO.

cheaper than Lansinoh is pure lanolin and you should be able to get this from a good dispensary (behind the counter) where they will put it in a tub, I think I paid about £2 for a tub (approx 100g I guess). I add a teaspoon of this and a glug of baby bath/shampoo to a cup of boiling water and stir well then mix with cool water in a bucket as the wool will shrink & felt if put in hot water.
New longies will need lanolising a couple of times before first use and once a week for a short while then they should last 3 or 4 weeks at a time.

Aww, I was looking forward to puttin them on her tomorrow. Taking bloody ages to dry!!!

I used the disana following the instructions then hung them over the shower rail. That was last night, they still not dry. Do I have to do that 2 more times, and let them dry completely each time.?
God can't you buy them already lanolised. lol

Yes, babylonglegs and flowerpot tots come pre-lanolised. I use my wool covers after only 1 treatment and they don't leak, but they do start to smell after only a few nights at first. For economy, you can get cheaper longies made from recycled jumpers at March Hare or puddlepants which I think are also pre-lanolised.

Wool generally needs to be lanolised 3 times before fully waterproof but 2 times is usually enough I've found. It also helps if the longies or whatever are worn in between each treatment to help the lanolin work into the wool. Wool needs to be washed when it smells but re-lanolised every month or so. I find that if you roll the longies in a towel after you have lanolised then they dry a lot quicker . HTH
