Which twin gets the box room

We live in one of those 1930s semis, with two decent bedrooms and a box. We've got 2 DS who share the second double room. They have announced that they would like their own bedroom, but obviously one will end up with a much smaller room. They are twins so not like we can give the biggest to the oldest, which I know a lot of people do. What should we do??

I'd flip a coin. Could you agree that they'll have 18 months / 2 years and then switch?

Flip a coin to see who starts in the bigger room, then swap each year for the new school year.

You leave them to come up with a solution, with the stipulation that your room is out of the equation.

Ask them privately first to their preference. My DDs are currently arguing over who will get the preferred box room (with loft bed). Currently, the plan is to swap every couple of years...

Is your financial ok, to the point that, whichever twin gets the smaller room, gets to choose the decor and you look at some of the amazing tiny bedrooms on Pinterest in order to get ideas for beds and space saving stuff. They are also able to keep a wardrobe for most of their clothes in the other twin’s room, so they’re not squeezing in too much furniture.

Has either already got their eye on the box room? Does one want their own room more? I'd say whoever gets the box room has it newly decorated and if you can afford it buy a raised bed with built in storage. Whoever has the big room has to be prepared to have extra toys/clothes stored in there. Swapping every year just seems a chore.

Get a high sleeper for the box room. They'll probably fight for it.

You can also agree to keep the toys in the larger room and use it as a playroom as well to have more space in the box room.

Both our boys wanted the box room as it's cosy. Many children like small spaces.

Do you ever have guests? The one with the bigger room has to move out if you have guests for the weekend.

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/10/2020 12:07

If they can't decide toss a coin.

Don't assume a high sleeper is the best bed option, we tried that and it swamped the room and made it claustrophobic to be in.

We knocked out the build in cupboard and had a local carpenter build a bed that fitted over the bit left and ran along the short side of the room. It pulled out for cleaning and it had handy storage underneath.

Those High beds are a nightmare to change.

Really try and sell the box room, but ultimately get them to decide. Depending on finances you can decorate the room and get new furniture. Most kids would love that.

If it's not working, I agree with PP about swapping every school year, but lots of kids like a change of scene

This! and if they can't they don't move
