10.5m old DD cries when someone laughs loudly

Hi,

I am curious if any of your children did this? DD is a happy, healthy baby who is having a bit stronger separation anxiety for the last month (nothing major - just some crying if I or DH leave the room and some clinging). She keeps an eye contact, smiles when we smile, she's a little chatterbox, she's crawling, getting up and trying to walk. She plays with her toys and loves our pets.

However, recently she started crying if we laugh loudly in her presence. I am wondering is it because she doesn't have much exposure to loud noises (our dogs sometimes bark but generally, DH and I are quiet types and we've been following all the Covid rules so consequently she didn't get much exposure to loud noises)? Or could it be that its because she doesn't understand what's happening? Its not like we never laughed in her presence before - we did, its just that she developed this reaction now.

I'd appreciate any thoughts!

My ds is the same age and has always been a bit like this! Certain noises, including loud, sudden laughter, upset him. The irony is that he is a really loud baby, it just seems that he prefers to be the one making the noise instead of hearing it?!

My 8 month old also cries when there is loud noise. He’s never liked anything sudden and loud. My friend popped round the other day and shrieked and clapped her hands when she saw him - he burst into hysterical crying and wouldn’t go near her!
I don’t think it’s too uncommon for them. Maybe try and introduce some noise where she feels very safe. I turn the blender on in the kitchen (I’m using it anyway - not just for this purpose!) and sit with my son smiling and clapping. He’s much more used to the noise now.

My 4 year old has always been like this and now she absolutely shits her pants when she hears a loud laugh. It just startles them I think. But maybe have her ears looked at just to be sure

Arrrr my almost 9 month old is exactly the same, especially when his dad sneezes, its a very over the top sneeze to say the least 😂😂xx

Phew, its a bit of a relief, I must admit. I was starting to get a bit worried but figured it could just be a stage. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with me!

My 12yo has always been like this. When he was a baby, we used to go for play dates at a lovely neighbour’s house. She had a loud laugh and he would jump a like when she laughed and then cry.

He still jumps at very loud sudden noises - sneezes, vehicles backfiring, sirens etc.

But it’s not an issue really.

My 5m old is very sensitive to loud or unusual noises. His eyes go huge and his lip quivers before cry. Poor little things ❤️
