Baby isn't rolling yet?

Hey guys, my lo is 6 months next week and she still isn't rolling over yet, she gets halfway then just stops like she can't be bothered... Has anyone else had this with their lo and at what age did they actually start to roll, scared incase she's a late crawler because of this, also she hates being on her tummy and she had reflux so we were late in the game for tummy time due to this x

My baby is 6.5 months and doesn't roll over. He doesn't even try. He had shoulder dystocia at birth so I've had him checked a couple of times but all seems fine. I think he really just can't be bothered!! He's able to sit and is a happy little thing so I'm not worried. He's my third and I'm happy for him to remain stationary for as long as possible!!!

DappledThings · 20/10/2020 14:50

DD rolled on her first birthday. Bum shuffled afyerbthat. Crawled at 19 months and walked at 21. Bit of a pain lugging her about when she was bigger but she was fine. Just took her time.

FieldOverFence · 20/10/2020 14:51

Some of them don't roll much, or at all .... my 2nd was a mega-roller but my first very rarely did, and yet she was crawled no problem and was walking when she was 13 months

It really doesn't matter what other people's babies did at a certain time because every baby is different. One baby may start rolling from 1 month old and then others might not start until 11 months. Don't stress about what your child is doing especially when they're only 6 months old! They have plenty of time to reach each milestone in their development they'll eventually do it. I definitely wouldn't be worrying yet! Just enjoy your baby being a baby they'll do it in their own time

mistermagpie · 20/10/2020 14:52

My niece never really rolled over at all, she didn't crawl either, but she walked before her first birthday. She can roll now obviously but she wasn't mobile in that way as a baby.

My middle child never sat up unaided until he could walk. They are all different and do things at different stages so try not to worry too much about it.

InTheLongGrass · 20/10/2020 14:57

6 months us well within normal range to start rolling.
Give her another 2 months, and contact the HV around 8 months if she still cant do it.

Erinaz · 20/10/2020 14:59

I would ask your health visitor or gp to check all ok. I'm sure it is ,but its nice for some professional reassurance. Its a good sign she is trying though.

Quail15 · 20/10/2020 15:02

My dd never really rolled. She did it once by accident at about 7 months ( she was watching a friend's cat run around) she hated it and howled. She went from just sitting to walking at 9 months with no rolling/bum shuffling/ crawling in between. She is nearly two but not speaking yet - I'm not worried, she will get there.
Every child is different try not to worry or compare.

MrFlibblesEyes · 20/10/2020 15:18

Ds learned to roll back to front at 6 months but didn't roll from front to back (the easy way) until 8 months! He was a later crawler at just turned 10 months but he turns 1 tomorrow and has been taking his first steps this week! He could stand and cruise before crawling - they dont always follow the rule book.

@oansyboo I do apologise if me asking something as a first time mother has bothered you for that very blunt and rude reply, we don't all know what we are doing sometimes so I was looking for advice not to be judged and certainly not to be told to enjoy my baby, which I definitely do.

Thank you everyone else for putting my mind at rest. X

They're all different.

1st was quite skinny and found it hard; 10 mo.

2nd was rotund and naturally wobbled and rolled. 4 months!!

I did do much more tummy time from early on with the second which I do think sometimes helps. First didn't and then hated it, so I didn't persevere as much.

Spanglebangle · 20/10/2020 21:30

DS has just started rolling at 9.5 months. It was like one day he just wanted to do it so he did. Now he rolls around constantly.

Erictheavocado · 20/10/2020 22:05

Please try not to worry. I think it's important, but hard, to remember that when you read that 'on average' babies do things at a certain age, it means that a lot if babies do these things earlier and a lot do them later. Babies really are all different - mine did things at different ages, despite having the same parents and having similar input from us. One didn't roll or crawl until 9 months but was walking by 10 months. The other rolled at around 5 months, crawled at 6 1/2 months but didn't walk until 15 months. One talked a lot earlier. One was out if nappies earlier. It is hard as a first time mum, especially if those around you are making you question your baby's achievements. Your baby sounds fine. Keep doing what you are doing. You'll see that she soon starts being more movie once she realises it means she isn't dependant on you to get around. If she's like my dgs, the rolling will begin in earnest just when you put up the Christmas tree and you'll end up with a tree that's only decorated on the top half!

oansyboo · 20/10/2020 23:13

I don't understand why you took my reply as rude nothing I said was intended as rude I was literally just saying that you shouldn't worry because all babies do things at their own speed I have a young baby aswell and I know how easy it is to compare your child to others. You took my reply in completely the wrong way

atvh · 21/10/2020 07:14

OP my son is a few weeks older than your DD and exactly the same. We did very little tummy time too as he hates it (although he is slowly tolerating more now). I was a bit concerned but am trying to hold on to the fact that all babies do progress at different rates. I’m sure both our LOs will get there in the end!

Wingingthis · 21/10/2020 07:18

My eldest daughter (3 tomorrow) also had reflux/hated tummy time and never rolled and crawled at 10 months. She is completely normal and runs circles round me now!! Walked at just gone 12 months too.

My second daughter just turned 6 months will roll from one side of the room to the other! I’ve done nothing different. They’re all just themselves try not to worry xxx

Sophie2309 · 21/10/2020 15:49

Please do not worry....... I work with children and know the 'development matters' (EYFS) which is all about child development as to what developmental things happen and at what ages. Rolling over comes under Physical Development: Moving and Handling at 8-20 months. Which means at any time between 8-20 months is the average age bracket in which a child will learn to roll, crawl, or bum shuffle. Each child develops at their own rate, and will not always do every single thing within the EYFS. For example, not all children will crawl, they can go from sitting up unsupported on the floor, to getting up and walking. Not all children will crawl/roll/bum shuffle so no need to worry Smile

Shattered30 · 21/10/2020 16:21

@Sophie2309 thank you so much
And thank you everyone else for the reassuring storys.
I am now telling myself she will do what she needs to when she's ready Grin

My two were 'late' crawlers. Neither did it until 11 months.

Enjoy being able to put them down and they stay there. I got so much more peace and quiet than friends who had 7 months crawlers lol.

FolkSongSweet · 21/10/2020 16:38

DS rolled once each direction and never again - I think he hated it! He crawled at 8 months, was pulling himself up to stand at 9 months and walked at 11 months. At the time I was worried about the rolling but now I look back and realise how ridiculous it was. I persevered with tummy time even though the poor child hated it!
