Any research on reusables and hip position

hi

I'm posting this in desperation...

I am using reusable nappies. i LOVE them, and wont go back to using usables. My Dd has hip probs ( dislocation etc) and was in harness. i wont go into it all as i dont need advise on that...

my problem is :

My DH hates washables. He thinks they look disgusting. Are disgusting, hates them, detests them... do you get the picture?

I am trying to come up with every single reason as to why we should ( and why i wont change) using reusables.

I know one really good reason is about the fantastic hip postition and the benefits to her in terms of further hip development. Doe any one have any research on this? can anyone point me in right direction?

or, can anyone come up with more good reasons i can talk to him about. He is insisting that when he changes her he will put on a disposable, despite that she now gets nappy rash if using one...

He is being so stubborn about it, I dont know what else to do I feel very strongly about using them, and since i am the one who doe the majrity of changes surely how i feel about them is more imprortant?

It is causing big arguments which actually are fairly unheard of with us....

can anyone help? i'm really upset about it. hes gone to do the shopping and went really cross.

I've posted this elsewhere too, to helo get response!

There's some stuff on this thread. HTH.

Sorry your dh doesn't seem to like them. Does he have difficulty using them? If so could you find easier ones for him? e.g. if you pre-stuffed a pocket it wouldn't be much different to putting a dispo on.

susiecutie · 13/10/2007 19:57

I always pre stuff them for him. i also tell him if there is poo in one he takes off, to leave it on top of the nappy bucket and i'll deal with it. Infact, i deal with the nappy bucket myself always.

thanks for link.. will take a look

Arse - he's gone to do the shopping throws out my response (don't buy disposables).

The hips positioning is very good for her. Which nappies are you using atm?

there is a condition called clicky hip, for which the treatment is...wearing two terry nappies all the time.

but surely if reusables caused hip problems there'd be a whole generation of hobblers around? if he really won't budge I guess you could suggest switching to bamboo nappies, which aren't as bulky.

MaeWhooooohest · 13/10/2007 20:03

DH had clicky hip and had to wear double terry nappy (this was over 30 yrs ago tho).

morocco · 13/10/2007 20:31

no idea sorry about research but do also have a dh like this (also was same on ff/bf - is bizarre). so sympathies and understanding. as you say, if you are doing most of the changes, it's up to you what you use. dh rarely changes the nappies now anyhow and has been worn down over the years. buy a few disps that are a size too small, they will then leak everywhere and you can go on about how your nappies never do that [evil laugh]. otherwise, the only advice i have is to tell him to get lost rather than use the voice of reason as he is obv not behaving on a rational level anyhow. this is something deeper. sorry, prob not v helpful

BabiesEverywhere · 14/10/2007 08:42

Why not ask him (without arguing) what he sees as the advantages of disposals over cloth and/or disadvantages of using cloth ?

Once you know why he thinks the way he does, then you might be able to persuade him. Otherwise let him use disposables and point out to him the resulting nappy rash etc.

BabiesEverywhere · 14/10/2007 08:45

Forgot the link to loads of nappy articles

Hope that helps

susiecutie · 14/10/2007 14:27

Ah, thanks guys

dd has had alot of treatment already for dislocated hips ad for actually no socket formed on one side. We are just waiting to fid if she will be having surgery. I thought in the mean time it would be worth increasing the help by using these nappies. THey ARE bulky, they are slinky minkis... I've just ordered some wonderooos which are slimmer, so that delas with one of his 'arguments'

I cant beleive he cannot see all the benefits. Its so disappointing. especially as i've talked about her health benefits (her hips)

I was born with the same problem and it was spotted very late, which has meant i've had a lifetime of pain and disablity with it. curently waiting for my second hip replacement. the first wa done before i was 30... I jsut want to give her ANY helping hand possible to prevent her having the same extensive probs i did, and still do.

I cannot seem to get a reasonable reason out of him... its like he's just got 'stuck' on this as a problem and wont budge.

I think you are right Morocco, in saying its something deeper..but what, i dod not know

I just wish i could find some proper research on the hip thing... i'm a nurse myself, ans have done a few searches on some of the journal sites i've access too... no joy

I'll keep looking though. and will look at the links you have all put up. thanks

If he cannot give ONE reason why he wants to use disposal nappies, it makes me wonder why he is bothered to the extent of argueing with you about this.

One of my links refered to a journal
START QUOTE
n Europe, the use of additional padding is accepted practice in paediatric hospitals as a method for managing hip displacement in newborns. According to J A Wilkinson (Proc R Soc Med 1975 Aug;68(8):476-9), ?[For] those babies in whom the capsule of the hip-joint is mechanically stretched: Spontaneous reduction and recovery is high in this group, if the babies are nursed in the prone posture with double nappies.? Of course, in much of Europe these days, that additional padding is now disposable, but cloth nappies by their nature provide similar benefits from the start for all children.

Abstract

susiecutie · 14/10/2007 22:55

Babieseverywhere. thank you SO much!!! brilliant, brilliant brilliant

It seems to have been resolved now... with more talking, and more discussion. and i did really say that i would not be budging on this issue as it means far more to me that we use them, than it really does to him that we dont...

we also had a bit of a laugh, learning some new folding styles with terries as we had run out of minkis due to Dh doing all the washing this weekend, and not getting it all in in time... he was doing a thousand other things too... anyway, up shot was that we had to use terries squares. He was particularly sold on the nappie nippa, and having to use 'manly' diagrams to try out different folds... his practical technical side well and truly being used... reckons he could have invented the nappie nippa...

SO, all ok now, and the journals on hips are fab, and really helped to, as of course, he want the best for hr health wise. He thought i was making it up to bolster my case for using them. thanks again

hi susiecutie, my sister was born with clicky hips (admittedly nearly 30 years ago), she was double-nappied for a while, then in a harness. In the end she had to have surgery and a 'frog' plaster. The op was a complete success and she has never had any problems or pain in the joint since, and it has not held her back in any way. I hope that the harness will work for your dd, but if surgery is necessary, then they were getting great results in the early 1980s, and think of the advances since then.

Flamesparrow · 15/10/2007 10:49

Hurrah for him loving the nippa!

So many people tell me their husbands can't work it and DH always looks like when I tell him.

DH was particularly swayed when I explained types of nappies in computer and console terms (having to explain that tots bots was like sony, and that bamboozles were PS2 but rainbow tots were more your basic playstation)

MrsWaggsnapps · 15/10/2007 14:11

He may remember wearing them himself, I can remember this far back and hated wearing sanitery towels for the same reason BUT i would never put my children in a disposable because of that, they are full of nasty chemicals without even going into their planet clogging abilities (and they smell bad too)

susiecutie · 15/10/2007 16:21

my DH cant remember much prior to 1975 when he was 10 years old! so dont think he can remember them on himself

He just rang to ask which fold i'd used today! When i told him, he said he'd have use the poo catcher fold as she's had a bit of a tummy upset... I didnt like to tell him I couldnt remember how to do it ( i'd have had verbal instructions ) lol
