hi..i graduate in ECSTASY this november ....after four years of full time study, two pregnancies and a whole lot of 'par for the course' family strife!...i finally have my vocational qualification ...(emoticons dont come close!)

i have just received teh bumpf through the post regarding the ceremony etc...including how and where to hire the gowns (compulsory!!)...but it looks like the cost of gown hire mmay be prohibitively expensive...which means i cant go!

so as a complete long shot im wondering if any one would be in a position to lend me theirs?

fingers crossed

can't help i'm afraid, but just wanted to say that if you can't go it will be sad after all that hard work but graduation is sooooo boring! my friend and i didn't bother going to our MSc one, just went out for the parties!

well done though!

Funny you should ask this today as we watched hubby's graduation video this morning. I asked about the robes and they are hired. Sorry, can't help with lending you one. Could you not make one cheaper?

As a teacher, I have my own. It's difficult to borrow them because you need the hood specific to your course.

Different colours for different colleges--ask your tutors, they might be obliged to dress up for graduation

every year and there may be a spare.

Congratulations!

My gown has been trashed by DDs wearing it for the last several Halloweeens.

PinkMartini · 13/10/2007 17:51

IIRC the gown hire wasn't expensive but photos afterwards were.

As SST says it's hard to borrow them because the colour of your hood is different depending on your qualification.

If money is so very tight, is there a student hardship fund you could apply to?

Or a proud relative who might give you the hire fee as a graduation present? Seems a shame to miss out on the final crest of all that hard work.

PinkMartini · 13/10/2007 17:52

Yes, sorry, meant to say
CONGRATULATIONS!

I bought my robe on Ebay. I bided my time for a while, having lost several auctions. I think in then end, it still cost me a fair bit - probably around £75? I had to get my hood new from Ede and Ravenscroft, and it was around £70 as well - ouch!

BTW, I graduated over 20 years ago, but only hired my robes at the time, never contemplating that I would ever need to wear them in the future.

what a stir!
i was fully expecting to have to bump this not particularly juicy thread.

thanks for the congrtas folks

for the first two and a half years i never questioned my decision to 'not bother' with teh graduation ceremony...however one term into my third year...i thought ''if i ever get this degree then i am absolutely definitely doing teh whole shebang!''..even though my mum said 'you'll be the first person in our family who has bothered''

i need a grey collar or something..
i will look into all suggestions/links...thanks...and might pass a hat round at the next family event

thanks again

How much exactly is it to hire it?

I know ours cost £40 to hire when we graduated from an access course.

Will it be that expensive that you'll have to miss it?

Congrats by the way!! What did you graduate in?
