Nappy rash, heartbroken 1 year old

Hi all,

Help needed for FTM, I weaned my baby onto whole milk about two weeks ago as advised by health visitor, he took to it straight away. He has a slight rash around his mouth and runny nappies but we thought that was him just adjusting to the milk (this is what HV said)

His bum has been slightly red for the last two days, we've had lots of nappy free time and sudocrem, it didn't seem to be bothering him.

Tonight he's woke up in so much pain after doing a poo, his bum is so angry and red. We've kept his nappy off for as long as we could and now we've cleaned him and put cream on as he was inconsolable and exhausted.

I'm traumatised, I've never heard him cry like that before. Do I stop whole milk? I'm at a loss, does anyone have any advice? I feel like the worst mum ever right now

Try caldesene ointment if rash is dry powder if rash is wet

Carouselfish · 18/10/2020 23:37

Barrier nappy cream every change. While bad try Weleda one, Morrisons own fine otherwise. Also try putting virgin solid coconut oil in his baby bath.

I agree with pp it may not be cow's milk if he did thrive on formula.

You could soak some milk on a small piece of cotton wool and put a plaster over and see if he has a red mark on his arm or something as a test....

Could be teething. It increases the acidity in the saliva which can cause nappy rash.

Metanium worked for dd1, it didnot for dd2 and she actually seemed quite sensitive to it.

QuestionableMouse · 18/10/2020 23:59

A dose of ibuprofen will help get any inflammation under control too. You can give calpol too if it's really sore.

@NameChange30 - I’m surprised there’s not supposed to be any tests for milk allergy. My Ds is supposed to be booked in for tests next month for dairy. We have been told to keep him off any dairy (formula and anything else) until he has been tested

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/10/2020 06:21

Hi - im a nurse. Defo DO NOT take a dirty nappy with you. Pictures on your phone will be ok of a fresh poo will suffice. Its a massive infection control risk. We can get the point with pics from a phone and you describing whats wrong.

How would that work if you had a formula fed baby out of interest?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/10/2020 06:24

And Drapolene is an incredible nappy rash cream. Its the best one ive found, and we sometimes prescribe it (although you can buy it).

Did you read my post properly? That's not what I said. There are tests for ige allergy but not for non-Ige allergy.

NameChange30 · 19/10/2020 06:47

"How would that work if you had a formula fed baby out of interest?"

Hypoallergenic formula. You can get it on prescription if your baby has CMPA.

Caspianberg · 19/10/2020 06:53

@newmum234 - I guess a prescribed formula. I breastfeed and he hasn’t reacted to that so far, but seemed to react to the baby porridge stuff which had milk powder in. But wasn’t a major reaction so maybe a one off ( hive like rash on face)

Tricerapops · 19/10/2020 06:54

DS1 had similar issues with never doing a solid poo. It got to the point we had to keep going back to the doctor as his nursery would send him home for loose nappies but we knew it wasn't a tummy bug.

What helped was moving to lactose free milk and cutting down his milk consumption (he drank a lot of milk during the day when with GPs). He's 6 now and can have dairy without any issues.

Notsofunnynow · 19/10/2020 08:17

My niece had the same, turned out she was lactose intolerant.

Hi everyone just wanted to give an update and say thanks so much for all the replies.

Nurse explained that they aren't concerned about sloppy poo's or the fact that he's never had a solid one before, she said that's perfectly normal.

She's told me to stop the milk and wean slowly.

I bought metanium and oh my god it's amazing! Unfortunately his down below and bum have some sores, but the cream has made so much difference. He's having nappy free time as much as I can too (although he peed on my bedroom carpet lol)

But he's much happier in himself today, thanks for all the advice I felt so lost last night x
