Breastfeeding and pregnant - supply issue?

I’m still breastfeeding 14 month old before his naps and before bedtime time and I’m 5 weeks pregnant. It seems like my milk supply has dropped and he keeps biting me and pulling on my nipples with his teeth - it’s excruciating 😩
I don’t want to stop breastfeeding him so what can I do about my supply?
Anyone been here? Will my supply go back up? Never had issues with supply before :(

From what I remember when I did it, the pregnancy hormones change the taste and consistency of the milk. At the time I was a member of La Leche League and though it was explained to me at the time I can just remember that! I was still nursing my two year old ds while I was pregnant with dd. I think my milk was less for a couple of weeks but either he got used to it or it went back to normal. Not much help am I! When dd was under 2 I was still bf her when I became pregnant with ds2. I ended up tandem nursing them which was lovely. One of them went through a bitey stage. I would just pull them closer which makes them open their mouth and say "no biting". They're all grown up now 🙂

I’m in the same position and have breastfed through a previous pregnancy too. From what I have read (and experienced personally) it is common for milk supply to diminish / dry up completely in the fourth and fifth month of pregnancy although this is by no means the case for everyone. The taste and consistency of the milk also changes, reportedly being saltier (?) and losing its natural sweetness which can cause some babies and toddlers to wean naturally at this time. Others will continue to hang on for dear life despite the lack of milk and will continue sucking for comfort until the colostrum comes in during the third trimester and they think all their Chrismasses have come at once!

In my previous pregnancy my milk supply dropped to almost nothing from 16 weeks and this did nothing to deter my toddler - he clung on for dear life and chomped and chewed and I found it excruciating. I also developed a major feed aversion which was unexpected. He never did wean during my pregnancy and I went on to tandem feed.

From what I have read the diminishing milk supply in pregnancy is hormonally driven and none of the usual methods of increasing milk supply will work. La leche league has lots of information on this and tandem feeding / feeding during pregnancy.

Good luck and congratulations on the pregnancy.

Thank you both. Guess I’ve just got to hope that it’ll come back naturally and soon so I have nipples left lol
