Formula milk change

Hi,

Does anyone know how long it takes to see if a change in formula is benefitting baby?

My LO (little one) is 9 weeks and since day one she’s been unsettled but lately she’s wriggling and grunting all night and wakes herself up hourly and needs resettling and then feeding every two. I’ve switched yesterday from cow and gate stage one to Hipp organic as I’ve read lots of good things, just wondered when I might start to see a difference... if I do?

Hi
I really hope this works for you however we swapped from SMA to Hipp Organic for the same reasons when our little boy was a few weeks old but didn't really make any difference, I then did a bit of research and realised this was normal newborn behaviour, his grunting just suddenly stopped when he was 14 weeks old 🥰🥰 xx

Amygcad · 14/10/2020 10:06

Oh no 🤦🏼‍♀️ I don’t know if I can survive another 5 weeks on the little sleep I’m getting 😔 although it’s reassuring that there might be an end point xxx

We switched from C&G to Hipp because her poops went to only every 5-6 days. I read that it can take 2 weeks to notice a difference; we noticed a change in just over a week. But obviously we changed for slightly different reasons

Newborns can just be grunty for a while. It’s quite normal unfortunately. They do grow out of it. I used very cheap light foam ear plugs. Just enough to block out every grunt but light enough to hear coughing or grizzling.

Amygcad · 14/10/2020 17:51

Id be fine with her grunting if she was settled but she’s not, she’s waking up every 30-60 minutes all night due to writhing around and screams until she’s settled again :(

I would looks into reflux (silent) and cows milk protein allergy.

Hey @Amygcad I have a five week old who is the exact same and I switched to Hipp today too! They initially thought she had CMPI but since rules out so seems it’s just terrible silent reflux. She’s been put on omeprazole liquid too so hoping calms down soon. My first was the exact same and honestly the thing that helped was time. I know it’s incredibly depressing and anxiety provoking, to think I could have months more of this is crippling my mood and mental state in general but I look at my 2.5 year old now and can’t believe how fast it went and how much it faded from memory. For what it’s worth, I read a book the other day that said Hipp is great for reflux which sounds to me like your little one may have? Fingers crossed for us both and sending you love. Just know that there are other mamas out there who really do get how tough this is, you’re not alone xxxx

Cantbutwill · 14/10/2020 20:38

Yeah, I was also going to say it sounds like silent reflux.

Amygcad · 14/10/2020 21:18

Thank you for your message, I hope your little one gets on with Hipp. No changes for us so far although she has had 3 poos today instead of the usual one and it wasn’t as watery. Was Your change to Hipp triggered by the book? I’m feeling like a bit of a failure at the moment as I’m not confident in anything I’m doing for her and just desperately want her to feel better or seem more relaxed. I can cope with 2 hourly feeds day and night but I can’t cope with feeling like I’m missing something for her.

I’ve looked up silent reflux the only two things I’ve noticed is that she has hiccups a lot and recently a little bit of coughing. She doesn’t really bring up milk much...

Hey @Amygcad - I know I don’t know you but please listen to me. You’re not a failure and you’re an amazing mum otherwise you wouldn’t be worrying about this, it’s so obvious you really love your baby. There’s nothing you’re missing and it’s NOT your fault. Babies are HARD. All my friends had easy babies and I’ve had two reflux babies and it sometimes it feels really unfair.

With silent reflux there’s no vomiting - it’s really easy to miss and the writhing and the grunting you’re mention are also symptoms. Yes it was triggered by the book - my switch to Hipp I mean, but also because a close friend recommended it. I’m really hoping it helps. The book is called The Baby Reflux Lady’s Survival Guide, a mama on here recommended it to me. I’m not for all of it - it’s quite “hippy dippy” but was definitely helpful xxx

Amygcad · 14/10/2020 21:39

It’s just so hard not knowing what’s right or wrong, I never expected to be a worrying mess so it’s all come as a bit of a shock and my partners always saying I worry too much but I don’t think you can worry too much when you’re in charge of a tiny human. I’m going to contact the GP tomorrow and see if they can look into the possibility of silent reflux and will take a look at the book too. Thank you for tour comments, i really needed them tonight x

I don’t think you’re worrying too much, until you’re a parent it’s impossible to comprehend how anxiety provoking it all is. I know you’re probably sick of hearing this but it will get better and sooner than you think. If she’s having digestive trouble which it sounds like is, she should improve when her digestive system does which is around 3-4 months. My daughter improved without me even really noticing, I just realised one day we hadn’t had to give her any medicine for ages. I’m there again now with my second and had forgotten how hard it is. Here if you want to talk. Let us know how you get on with doctor x
