Worried DS doesn’t have the right toys

My DS is six months old and has a selection of toys including ribbons, teething bracelets, crinkly books, an inflatable tummy time mat, rattles, cuddly toys, black and white books, balls and a playmat with a mirror and things he can kick to make a sound.

He’s had all this stuff for a while now and I’m worried that it’s not stimulating enough now he’s six months old - and that his toys don’t encourage him to be particularly active?

My friend’s child has a Jumperoo but we don’t have space for one in our small flat. I also have a second hand chair thing that you attach to the door frame, but haven’t used it yet as I don’t trust that it’s secure enough!

Are there any other toys DS might enjoy now that he’s six months old? Any suggestions welcome.

Try empty boxes, distract your DC stick a surprise inside. Egg cups, smaller boxes, picture of a face, anything. Pretend to be surprised too.

My youngest loved watching the kitchen doors open and shut. At a year he would sit and study hinges, much better than his boring jumperoo Wink

Everything in the world is new to them at that age.

It's not all that long till Christmas anyway Wink

Have a look here OP - it aims to reduce the number of toys you buy by making sure you have a selection that aids all areas of development through play without repeating yourself. It includes household objects in the list as well to give you some inspiration (and to reduce buying too much unnecessary plastic !)

It breaks down your child’s play needs by age. I found it v helpful as a shopping addict worrying that I don’t have enough toys for my 11 week old 🙄🤣

My three year still loves the drawer in the kitchen with the whisks, rolling pins, ice cream scoops etc spends hours in there. Often I have to ask for items as he’s taken them away elsewhere to play with and forgotten to bring them back!
Anything dangerous has been removed from the drawer.

Maybe some instruments?

Tambourine, maracas, cage bells.

Agree with everyone else! I created ‘treasure baskets’ which consisted of things like a wooden spoon, spatula etc and to add interest I would put on in a sock / wrap it in newspaper.
Rather than making a fuss of the basket I would just pop it somewhere near her and wait for her to find it during the day! She loved it.

Now 18mth her favourite things are removing & returning tissues to a box and opening a drawer of all her plates etc & inspecting them.

I avoid plastic tat if possible (despite my mother’s best efforts!!) and I use the Five Minute Mum book and ideas from Montessori books to help.

When we read the paper at the weekends I make her a mini newspaper to ‘read’ out of a section we don’t read!
