Sleeping bag for a car seat

Ami100 · 08/10/2020 16:51

Hi I'm looking for a recommendation. I need a 2.5 tog sleeping bag for my 7 month old son that I can put him in when we leave grandmas house. He falls asleep and then I transfer him straight to the cot.

So what I need is a sleeping bag for a car seat . The only ones I've seen online are swaddle bags for newborns or ones for older children aged 12 months and above.

Any ideas anyone?

Grobag travel range. Not 100% sure they do 2.5 tog and I'd be worried about DC overheating in the car seat in a 2.5 tog bag

FairfaxAikman · 08/10/2020 17:13

In addition to the overheating issue, I'd be worried that a sleeping bag would be too thick to be safe.

We used very thin fleecy onesies from Primark over pyjamas if we needed to put DS in the car but then granny's is only a five minute drive.

They do a travel seat which has Velcro openings for car seats but they are usually in the lighter sizes.

It is not recommended to put baby/child in a car seat when they are wearing a thick coat, so I'd be surprised if it was advisable to use a sleeping bag.

InTheLongGrass · 08/10/2020 17:16

Gro bag, but I echo above, 2.5 tog in the car could be too much. Can you do a thinner one, and add a blanket at Grandmas?

lambo88 · 08/10/2020 17:20

Our little boy is 2yo and we've used gro bag sleeping bags since he was little and we love them...not sure about the car situation thou...I'm sure it would be ok for short journeys as he/she would g her to hot xx

Wow I really didn't know they recommend no coats for cars? What do babies wear then to stay warm in winter months?

Cars are generally quite warm enough once you're going. Do you normally wear a coat in the car? We usually put a blanket on top of the child when we get in the car, and they kick it off as it warms up, or when they get bored!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 08/10/2020 18:20

Thick coats aren't recommended because the straps then don't tighten enough. Mine only ever had a blanket over them in the car. Mind you they never slept in sleeping bags either

sesquipedalia · 08/10/2020 18:43

Tuppence and Crumble star wraps are good for use in car seats and keep them snuggly but safe.

Lazypuppy · 08/10/2020 18:46

Gro bag do travel growbags, slightly thinner togs. Has opening back and then through zip at front to connect straps. We always did that after we'd been round ftiends/family in evenings and put dd to bed thete then transferred home

In winter, you put blankets over kids in car seats, then put coats on when you get out.

zebrapig · 08/10/2020 18:57

Grobag to travel sleeping bags up to 2.5tog. They also come in 6-18m size.

You could also look at Morrck blankets for the car seat.

We've used both in the past.

JustCallMeGriffin · 08/10/2020 18:58

We had a blanket with sleeves for DD2. It went over the top of the car seat straps so didn't interfere with how effective they were and fastened safely behind her neck with velcro so could be removed fast and easy.

Maybe something like that would work for you. Can't remember where we bought it from but I recently told a new mum friend about it and she's made one herself.

baby mori do one in a 2.5tog. the "clever sleeping bag" They're expensive but the are designed to last from birth until around 18mo-2yrs. They are wonderfully soft too. we were gifted one and it's lovely. They have poppers under the arms to make it snug and also poppers to make the length shorter. its bamboo so good at temperature regulating supposedly.

Babyboo.ie do fab sleeping bags with feet and detachable arms and have international shipping. The quality is brilliant I have 2 for my DS. The size range starts at age 3 months and goes up as far as 4 years I think !

AegonT · 10/10/2020 11:24

I wouldn't want a thick sleeping bag on in the car for the same reason as a coat - that the puffy material would compress in a crash and mean the straps were not tight against the body meaning the child is not secured. We always put the baby in the car with no coat and put it on when we got to the destination. If it was very cold we put a blanket over the straps but we generally got the car to a comfortable temperature for us without coats so the baby was fine.

A light cardigan and blanket. It's really not safe to put a coat or anything thick on baby in the car

I have a special triple thickness blanket specially for the car. The woman who makes it usually makes dog beds 😂
BertieBotts · 10/10/2020 16:13

Just put a blanket over the strapped-in baby in car seat ideally, carry car seat into house and transfer him into laid-out open grobag when you put him in the cot.

The problem with anything puffy especially if it is over the shoulders is that the straps end up too wide, and especially with the infant seats that only have a 3-point harness, if you were to crash they can literally just come out the middle as the straps part over their shoulders.
