A bit of fun really, but quite interesting. My dd aged 5 has just lost her 4th tooth. First two - she just got the money. Third one she lost the lost tooth on way home from school and was inconsolable till I said we'd leave the tooth fairy a note. Tooth fairy then of course had to write a note back saying thanks for the tip off etc etc. Today she loses her fourth tooth and I go in to say good night and she's already written the tooth fairy a list of questions!! What's your name? How many tooth fairies are there? and What do you do with all the teeth?

Answers on a postcard please before 10pm!!

It's called Twinkle the Tooth Fairy, by Michelle White.

Twinkle appears to be the main ttoth fairy, but lives with other fairies in Fairyland. Her best friend is Thimble the dressmaker fairy. Doesn't seem to say what she does with the teeth though.

This is a bit from "Dear Tooth Fairy" by Alan Durant.
No2 Tooth House, Flower Lane, Fairyland

Dear Holly
Questions, questions !
We tooth fairies are very busy you know. Luckily there are lots of us. Each night we fly hither and thither around the world from our home in Fairyland, collecting teeth. Human teeth are very useful to fairies. They are white (our favourite colour), strong and last a long time. At the moment we are using the teeth to build a palace for the Fairy Queen. I knew that your tooth had fallen out because the tips of my wings tingled. In fact they tingled a lot, which means that yours is a very good tooth. You must have been looking after it very well.

Love the Tooth Fairy

We had to do a note for DD's second one as it vanished and she wanted to know the tooth fairy's name. It was in the summer so I left a daisy by her pillow, so our tooth fairy is Daisy !

If anybody's read Hogfather by Terry Pratchett, there's a tooth fairy in that. She's very resourceful - carries a folding ladder to get into children's bedrooms and a small pair of pliers in case she can't make change and has to pull another tooth out. Probably best not to put this in the note though!

I always thought they used children's teeth to make fairy dust so they could fly. My DS's tooth fairy, Estanesse, left him some from his first tooth - a bit like flour actually!!

Got the name from a fairy site that gives you your fairy name - put in DS's name and got 'Estanesse'

We have had similar dilemma with dd1. After first letter of course she wants to write a letter every time - aaarrgghh!!! Anyway, this is the type of thing we did, dd1 loved it, included a few fairy pictures on it as well.

Thank you for your letter and your tooth. I have left you something in exchange for your lovely white tooth. I can?t tell you how I know when you have lost a tooth, it really is a magical fairy secret that no one else knows! Fairy dust, you see, is magical, it can do all good things. Fairies of all kinds use fairy dust to work their magic. Fairies go all over the world and collect baby teeth that are left under pillows and leave something in return. Then we take these teeth back to Fairyland, and make them into fairy dust. We get magic from all the good and happy children of the world. Every time you smile, you store a little magic in you teeth. The more you smile, the more magic is in your teeth. It?s smiles that make fairy dust magical. Again thank you for your tooth, . It is a very happy tooth and will make wonderful fairy dust.
Happy dreams
Love from the Tooth Fairy

Thanks guys - the mumsnet tooth fairy is called twinkle and there are too many tooth fairies worldwide to count and I did the thing about fairy dust and magic from smiles - hope she buys it all
My sister's idea was that the teeth were needed for new babies and my goddaughter who is 10 months was needing one, but don't want to get into God vs tooth fairies so am sticking to magic

Thanks as ever for the great responses. Isn't it great that they believe in magic

DD has a book about the tooth fairy who has to collect teeth as they are star seeds. She has to collect them and plant them in the sky, where they go into stars. The really special ones grow into the gold stars. Ahh.. DD however is more interested in the monetary value, rather than the magical value of her teeth.
