Baby glasses!

Hi, has anyone got any advice for keeping glasses on a baby? My baba is 13 months old and got her first prescription today, glasses should be ready in about a week, problem is she inherited my stubbornness! Any tips or advice gratefully received 😊 xxxx

I was convinced my baby wouldn't keep them on but she loved being able to see so were only thrown off once x

That's great, gives me some hope 😅 fingers crossed

I’m not sure how much this helps but a child I used to look after had a strap that went round her head (almost like swimming goggles but not so tight) so her glasses stayed on.

Thank you, we've gone for those ones too, the optician said it won't stop her taking them off, just stops them falling off when bending/playing etc

Out of interest, how did you know your baby needed glasses OP? I’m very short sighted, as is DH, so I’m sure my baby will need them too. What’s the earliest age you can get an eye test done?

@atvh speak to your HV if you have concerns.

How old were you and dad when you first started wearing glasses?

JacktomyDaniel · 08/10/2020 20:01

Same. My son never once took them off because he was so thrilled to be able to see.

Like a PP has said my little girl never bothered taking hers off once she got them. I think because she has quite a strong prescription she saw how big the improvement was and kept them on. We also had little sports extension bits to put on the arms of her glasses from specsavers which worked better than the strap.

What's her prescription? Hope it all goes well for her.

@diningroomfloorlady we were both at primary school. There's no sign at this stage that DS does have any sight issues - but how is it possible to tell with a 6 month old baby?

Shieldingending · 08/10/2020 21:31

It is possible to tell even with a baby- they put drops in my DD’s eyes and shone lights into them (through lenses I think) to work out the prescription. If you have concerns get your GP to refer the little one to the hospital

atvh · 08/10/2020 23:12

Thanks. No concerns at the moment, but I’m not sure what I should be looking for!

We new because her left eye turns in a lot, and she constantly trips over pretty much anything, they can test any age, they put drops in the eyes to dilate the pupils then used a light to work out prescription, not very pleasant an older baby but probably wouldn't bother a younger one.
Babas prescription is +5 for both eyes and may need to go higher, won't know for another 3 months, also may need a special lens for the left eye instead of patching if the glasses don't sort it out. Am really hoping she'll leave them on once she realises she can see!
Sorry for the late reply, I didn't get any notifications 😕
