DS randomly sick tonight

I fed DS (5.5 months) his usual bottle of formula at about 6pm this evening then took him up for bed at 7.15pm. He was quite distressed when I put him in his cot - crying and not settling - and then he suddenly brought up quite a lot of milk.

I immediately sat him up whilst he was being sick as I was worried about choking (is sitting them up the best thing to do?) and then changed his sleepsuit, by which point he was fine again - happy and calm. He went back in his cot and fell asleep quite quickly after that.

DS is hardly ever sick so I was a bit surprised - is there anything I should do now or keep an eye on overnight? Thanks.

For my 7 month old I wouldn’t bat an eye. He is sick/reflexes about once a day.

Unless he is unwell in himself I would worry at all tbh. At his age it’s probably just one of those things x

Did it seem like all his milk? Had he burped before you put him down? I'd probably take his temp and then check through the night to keep an eye in him.

Grobagsforever · 06/10/2020 20:30

Sounds like standard baby behaviour. Check him before you go to bed. DO NOT set alarms or anything throughout the night, completely unnecessary. Babies do not choke on their vomit, it's liquid for a start!

No, it wasn't all his milk. Probably about 50-80ml I'd say, although it's hard to tell. He had a 240ml feed at 6pm.

Yes, I did burp him after feeding (always do) but he didn't do a very big one - he tends not to these days.

DS used to do this randomly at around that age. He was always fine - I think it was just trapped wind or something.

Try not to worry!

newmum234 · 06/10/2020 20:36

Thanks. It's just a bit of a shock when you see all this milk coming out of them. I think I looked a bit shocked and DS saw my expression, which was unfortunate - I do try to stay calm for him at all times but it took me by surprise!

Did I do the right thing sitting him up? He was lying on his back with his face pointing upwards - not a very easy position to be sick!

DD at ten months still spits up after every bottle, so I wouldn't worry. She went through a projectile spitting up stage too, which was unpleasant for us all but didn't bother her.
However if your baby doesn't do this, then I'd probably want to keep an eye on it and discuss it with the doctor. In our case, it seems to be related to her CMPA and now the very thin milk she is on for that.

Nosleeptilteenagers · 06/10/2020 20:38

Probably a bit of wind with all that milk on top of it.
Mine were never sicky babies but would sometimes randomly be sick.
No need to check overnight, you’d hear him on the monitor if he was upset anyway surely.

My doctor is awful unfortunately and very dismissive, so there's no point speaking to them.

I'd say DS has done this about 10-12 times since birth, so it's not usual for him.

Wouldn’t worry about it unless it becomes a frequent thing! Babies throw up all the time 😊

zaffa · 06/10/2020 22:32

I will say though that very often when younger DD would do this because she had wind and milk sitting on top of it too (the wind mostly being caused by the CMPA I think)

newmum234 · 06/10/2020 22:48

Thanks. I don’t think DS has CMPA so seems like it’s just one of those things.

I wouldn't be worried, but then I had a very sickly/refluxy baby so I don't really know what's normal. However, the only time I was worried about his being sick it was very different to a reflux sick - that time he actually put effort into being sick, he seemed lethargic and his eyes were rolling back in his head - he was very clearly ill. I think if he seems ok in himself and it doesn't happen again, it's probably just one of those baby things.

I would check on him whenever I woke in the night though, just to make sure.

CostaCosta · 06/10/2020 22:58

When my ds had a sickness bug, he'd start to whimper in bed and then a few seconds later he'd be sick. Probably the same sensation/pain we get when we are going to be sick.

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 06/10/2020 23:26

Yes sitting him was the right thing to do.
YouTube first aid for babies/children and just in general, it's very informative.

My son did this one time but it was the whole of his milk. All over him, me, the car and the car
