When did your baby stop making noises in their sleep???

My 13 week old sleeps really well but grunts and squirms and just generally makes a racket all night. Sometimes I can sleep through it when I’m exhausted but most of the time it keeps me up all night. I was hoping it would have settled by now.

Interested to know as my 13 week old is exactly the same, it drives me mad! At this point I don't know how I can't sleep through it as I'm shattered. I've tried earplugs but they block out too much noise so I don't respond to her cues in time/ before she gets worked up. I never realised tiny babies made so much noise!!

My 13 week old hasn't done it for a week or 2 now!! Its not wind is it? If she falls asleep on the boob and I dont wind her properly we get a grunty night still x

Unfortunately it might not go away. Just put my 18 week old DS in his own room and into his cot tonight as he had outgrown the bedside crib and his thrashing around/leg thumping and general attempts to self soothe were very noisy indeed. Was the same with my first DS. I know we possibly disturbed them by turning over and my husband snores loudly and is a noisy sleeper.

My 17 week old is still disturbing me!

SofiaAmes · 06/10/2020 05:06

Still waiting for that day and my dd is 18 years old.

Haha, I was thinking the same, 42 years and counting here (gives DH the side eye) HmmGrin

17 years and counting - my ds grinds his teeth when stressed and my dd talks in her sleep and soundtracks her dreams. At least they're in their own rooms (ds was in his own room from 8w, the advice was different then)

It'll pass op. Can you have a night in another room while dad sleeps with baby so you're not disturbed as much? White noise?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 06/10/2020 06:00

10 year old...still waiting. She shouted out 'Mummy' and a long 'No' about half an hour ago hence I'm awake!

I agreed with PPs that is doesn't stop although it's less of a disturbance once they are in their own rooms. 6yo DD1 grinds her teeth but otherwise is pretty quiet (always has been). 4yo DD2 has graduated from grunting but now talks in her sleep when she isn't snoring her head off.

Both are better than DH though who will at least once a week (in his sleep) roll over to face me and do a very loud barking cough right in my face. Just one cough. He then goes straight back to sleep whilst I lie awake due the amount of adrenaline now coursing through me. And he snores. Loudly.

Oh no!! Sounds like I’d better buckle down and get used to it ha ha ha. At least one of us is getting a good night sleep Grin

I co-slept with ds and tried to co-sleep with dd. I kicked her out of my bed and out of my bedroom when she was 6 weeks old. I couldn't get a wink in with all the noise she was making. I don't know if there's a correlation, but she had terrible screaming night terrors as a small child and still gets nightmares and talks in her sleep as a teenager.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 06/10/2020 21:10

Ah baby grunts are so annoying! I used to wear very light cheap foam ear plugs, just muffle the grunts enough but you can still hear a cough through them, so would hear any crying or other noises that you need to hear.

carlywurky · 06/10/2020 21:17

Ds2 was the wriggliest, gruntiest little thing. I'm ashamed to say he lasted one night in with us before he was despatched to his own room. Doors open between us obviously but it meant we all slept.

He slept right through the night from 5 weeks and I can count on one hand the number of times he ever got me up in the night after that point, so it worked for all of us Smile

Just to let you know my 15 week old started grunting and squirming at 1-2 weeks and it was so loud I couldn't sleep, he was also doing it through the day. After seeing the health visitor at 8 weeks she suggested he might have a dairy allergy. Less than 1 week after starting on Nutramigen the grunting and squirming went away. I should also note that he was only doing bowel movements once every couple of days and seemed to be in some discomfort. He now goes everyday. Just in case this might be relevant to you? x

TyroBurningDownTheCloset · 06/10/2020 22:28

I've no idea if DD ever stopped, because she was such a noisy sleeper she ended up in her own room at six weeks. Last shared sleeping quarters with her last summer (a tent) and she was still making quite the racket.

DS is almost 6 months and is mostly silent, but still does some leg thumps, random one off cries and strange straining noises. Is that normal for this age?
