My 4 year old still cries like a baby

Any tiny shock, pain or frustration and he opens his mouth wide and it’s
WAAAAAAAAA WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He’s nearly 5!

Not only that, he is super loud. No. Not loud like any other child, your child, whoever’s child - he is louder. I’m not exaggerating, I’ve never heard another child cry half as loud.

He sends any adult within a mile radius into a panic thinking he has mortally wounded himself.

I have other children. They cry all the time and it’s fine but this is on another other level.

He’s not trying to communicate what is wrong, he just goes into full siren mode.

He’s a bright child but his school report suggested he was slightly emotionally immature. He’s always been a bit up or down.

Anyone experienced similar and came out of the other end? Hints or tips?

Are there tears involved or just the noise?

FortunesFave · 05/10/2020 22:49

Well can I ask how you react when he does this? I'd ignore him unless there was blood or genuine injury.

Not exactly ignore him...but be brisk. He's maybe conditioned to getting a lot of attention when he's hurt himself. A quick "Oh you're fine!" and walk away.

No advice I'm afraid but he sounds like my son ! My DS is a wailer.

Hopefully we shall have some advice soon ...

My now 9 yr old has only recently outgrown this

He is a creature of extremes - usually very happy occasionally hugely furious/distraught....

When actually properly hurt he’s pretty silent🤦🏻‍♀️

Nothing helped, I would mostly reassure passers by that he didn’t require an ambulance (!) while explaining to him that I understood he was hurt etc etc

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 05/10/2020 23:02

Sorry I meant to say I think it was communication he just wants other people to understand that he is hurt - now that he doesn’t do the wailing he commentates & re-enacts the injury 😂

Sounds just like my DS, he outgrew it at 13 so you’ve not long to go Grin

TulipsandDa1s1es · 05/10/2020 23:36

my DC outgrew this at around 8. i tried ignoring them, i tried chatting about why they did it, i tried sending them to their room...nothing worked. in the end i did a confused face paired with a mumsnet head tilt and just started saying "oh, thats a very odd noise to make at your age". she stopped within weeks. now she is a very high pitched tween who squeals a lot.
