Do babies burp less as they get older?

My DS is 5.5 months now and seems to bring up fewer burps after feeding. Occasionally I'll get one out of him but sometimes there will just be nothing at all. He used to be a good and reliable burper after feeding and did quite large ones! He's 100% formula fed.

Should I be rubbing his back for longer after feeds to try and get a burp out, or is it normal for babies to burp less when they get to this age?

Totally normal as they get better at drinking/eating (fewer air bubbles) and get strong and mobile enough to burp when they want to.

...until they hit the age of 9/10-ish and suddenly burp loudly at every manufactured opportunity Hmm

You've just made me realise I haven't heard 13 month old DD burp in quite some time. Her farting is quite spectacular though.

I never burp mine now at 5 months.. I just assumed they outgrew it. I think now they wiggle more, roll around, etc they must just kinda of shift any gas themselves. Or they fart more!

Yes it all gets moved more so they don't need to be burped, in fact babies don't actually need to be burped anyway, it's a cultural thing that we do, weirdly.

I generally stopped burping DS once he proved able to do some enormous belches without any intervention from me.
