Anyone out there with two under two, having day of chaos

I have two lovely daughters, 18 months and 4 months, some days (like today) it feels as though I'm trying to juggle a hundred things at once, in fact I can't believe that in the rare half an hour that they are asleep at the same time I am on Mumsnet ( I'm a bit of a newbie here ), of course I'm also surrounded by a sea of toys, lunch stuff etc etc. I just thought I'd see if there was anyone out there in the same boat, as sometimes i just want to sit down in the middle of it all and cry. Of course if you have any other combination of children or just the one I know its probably exactly the same. Going to get strong drink now (tea - before anyone throws there hands up in horror)

Ooh yes, dd2 does this wierd screech thing in her sleep, and it wakes up dd1, fortu nately only when she is napping (or if it is early in morning) i guess when she is in a light sleep. But yes, it feels like such a huge achievment when they are both asleep at same time that I just bang my head on the desk when they wake each other up.Mine have just both woken up, so have put Dora the Explorer on whilst loading up the buggy for the next big outing....to the Park!

Dora the Explorer
Peppa Pig
Loony Toons
Roary the Racing Car

All excellent escapes!! Even for just five minutes to go and have a wee!

Do you have a garden, hazey?
Even on wet days, I send them out there (the only hazard really is soil, which DD loves to eat) and just watch them from the door. Luckily the computer is right next to the door! And on wet days, stick em in wellies and go jumping in muddy puddles! Great fun.

hazeyjane · 12/10/2007 19:09

Our garden at the moment is a a tiny totally unbabyfriendly bit of dirt. My dh is trying to get it sorted, but there are loads of hazards like a set of steps, a big crumbling dry stone wall (lots of tumbling boulders aagh), its also got shared access, so we are trying to sort out baby gates between other peoples gardens (they might not want our 2 eating their dirt). Ds1 wants to go out their all the time, but I have to out there with her, otherwise it turns into a mountain climbing adventure! Met a mum in the park this afternoon with 2yr old twins, and it was good to stand and chat whilst they all tantrummed around us.

hiya, i only have one little monster atm butam pregnant so that will soon change! I thought i would mention jools oliver (jamies missus) book minus 9 to 1 her story of having her two babies surprisingly close, i really enjoyed it.

hazeyjane · 12/10/2007 20:36

Yes I really enjoyed that book, her photos of the family are gorgeous, I just can't imagine her getting into the big yoghurty mess that I do.The Mel Giedroyc books about pregnancy and the 1st year are really good, and funny too, made me feel a lot better about my shoe chewing daughter. Wow Loopymumsy, Number 3 on the way - respect due!I think I'll stick with 2, I'm getting on a bit.Lulalullaby, i try not to cave, but I'm a natural born pacifist and hate a fight ( actually scrap that I'm just a wuss, and try to save my strength for the bigger battles, please don't think too badly of me! )

Haven't read the whole thread but just wanted to say that even though it may be hard now juggling 2 under 2 etc, in time you will reap the rewards for having them so close together.
I have 16 mths between my 2DS's (now 2.7 and nearly 4) and it is brilliant. I never thought we would get to this stage. I was constantly drained and stressed. Gradually it improved and am now delighted that they are so close in age

tiggyhop · 12/10/2007 21:41

Hi everyone, I would love to join this thread. I had three under three (DS was 2.10, DS2 16 months when DD was born). Now they are 4,3 and 2. Never thought I would survive this long, particularly as DD did not sleep through the night until 22 months.

Now they are at a Montessori school and have just started staying for lunch. Yesterday instead of the reused margarine pot of macaroni cheese I had done for DD, she had a pot of margarine for her lunch. I tried to spread macaroni cheese on my toast for my lunch...

chocciedooby · 12/10/2007 21:44

lol tiggyhop
I still keep putting my car keys in the fridge and the kettle in the washing machine

lol tiggyhop. the most insane thing i have done yet is putt dd1 in bath with her socks on. She looked at me as though to say weirdo but actually looked quite pleased. Just swapped phil and teds round to two seats today, and dd2 instantly fell asleep. she is only 12wks and I thought she would be too small.

Things seem to be slotting into place a bit more now, thank goodness.

hazeyjane · 13/10/2007 20:27

I've just done the same with our Phil+teds, dd2 was getting way too big for the bag underneath, and the side was getting torn, where dd1 kept leaning in to kiss her sis/poke her in eye.I am really looking forward to when they get that bit older, despite the exhaustion it is lovely when dd1 does something she thinks is hilarious, and then runs over to dd2 to share the joke, although sometimes, when they smile at each other I already feel ganged up on! Had to squeeze dd1 into dd2's spare babygro when out today, as dd1 had spilt drink all over herself. She looked very chichi, in a size 0-3 month babygro straining at the seams, and wearing wellies too - I think I may have started a 'look'.

Just out of interest have you put a head hugger on the seat of the P&T? DS2 used to love being in the cocoon but the past few days he has been very sad, he is 11 wks and very very long and is a bit wedged in there now.

When I asked on here recently, people were saying 4 mths before using the back seat..DS2 will never last in the hammock until then!!

hazeyjane · 13/10/2007 21:11

My dd2 is 4and half months, and sits up pretty well (she is a sturdy little thing), hadn't thought about putting headhugger in, but I might try, as it sounds like a good idea.We stopped using the cocoon really early on as she just hated it, but put a moses basket mattress in and just lay her in the bag without the cocoon, which made it a lot more roomy, and then she seemed to love it in there(until her head started to poke out of the top!)

Mine are nine months and 23 months! It gets better. You;re still in that crazy newborn stage at 4 months I reckon, but not much longer! Mine both sleep at the same time every day for 1 1/2 hours. It's fantastic. Completely transforming.
Good luckx

Washersaurus · 13/10/2007 21:28

Beenleigh don't get lulled into a false sense of security DS1 is 2.2 and has recently given up his daytime naps completely....aaaargh!!

hazeyjane · 13/10/2007 21:53

Mine are going to have daytime naps until they leave home - it is a rule of the house.

I have put a sheepskin liner on seat. dd2 is 12 wks today and very petite but fits quites nicely. I find she shouldn't fall out because of side straps, well I bloody hope not.

Dd1 will be starting nursery for the first time on the 5th of Nov. She is 18mths and needs that extra stimulation, and I have no shame in admitting that I need a rest and a bit of time to catch up. She will be going for 2 days and although I will miss her I am looking forward to it. Does that make me sound selfish ?? Oh well if it does. At least she will have a mentally healthy mother !

hazeyjane · 14/10/2007 20:11

I've been looking for one of those sheepskins, they look really cosy, and I hate the nylonyness of the cosytoes I've got. I don't think its selfish at all, I wish that I could start dd1 at a nursery for even one morning, but not sure we could afford it. I think it would do her good though, she is a complete limpet, and won't let go of my leg at toddler group, I think she has been worse since dd2 came along, and because we moved shortly after ( gosh we are mean ), so it would probably be good for her to spend a little time away from me.

Hello folks may I join you? DD is 21 months and ds 12 weeks tomorrow. (18 months difference)

My goodness it's hard work and I'm lucky enough to have dd full time at nursery during the week until Christmas when she goes back down to the 3 days she was going when I was at work. She has stopped whacking and poking and biting so much and I can actually leave them in the same room without worrying SO much.

I've just said something to dh, he said yeah and then a moment later said what did you just say? I have no idea and he can't think either. It's been a tough day today and that's with the 2 of us.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/10/2007 20:46

ds1 is 2 and ds1 is, erm....1, so i have days of chaos too.
Usually more so at the weekend when dh is home....
