Weaning advice with CMPA

Hello all,

I'm a few weeks off yet but I want to get as much advice as I can prior so I'm all prepared. It's the week before Christmas when I can start weaning DS and we're currently on Nutramigen for a suspected milk allergy so any help around this would be great. He's currently 15 weeks and takes roughly 4 8oz bottles (sometimes a little more) a day, he takes no nightly feeds as he's sleeping through and has done for 2 weeks now. He's a big baby but that's because he's long due to us being tall parents, and is currently roughly 16Ibs and in 6-9 month clothes. Anyways, I've read that you start with veg and fruit but from what I can see a lot of people add butter and yoghurt, is this the done thing? Obviously I'll have to source dairy-free alternatives. Any reading suggestions for this would be great.

Also, do you offer your baby water? My health visitor hasn't said anything but I know other Mums do? Thanks in advance! x

The nhs website chad all the weaning info you need but in summary

  • dont wean until 6 months
  • give finger foods from the start, this can be with purées too if you want but it’s not necessary
  • no honey until 1 yrs
  • no whole nuts until 5 yrs (nut butters and chopped are fine)
  • grapes need to be cut in half length ways until at least 5
  • low salt
  • no added sugar
  • at 9 months build up to 3 meals a day
  • at 12 months add snacks

As for CMPA you need a referral to a paediatric dietitian?

There is no need to add butter or yoghurt to food.

Hi! My son was diagnosed with CMPA at 2 weeks old so I understand your apprehension with weaning! Water is a great addition to meals from 6 months old, I started offering him a bit to loosen his stools up in addition to his milk. They don't drink much water to begin with.
We found that banana, avocado, sweet potato and pear worked really well for baby first foods if you're doing baby led weaning. We then tried alpro soya yogurts which are a big hit (although do have sugar in so probably not a great first food!).
We found out the hard way that there is milk in lots of things you wouldn't expect, so be careful with all purees or snacks you eventually buy.

Oat milk
Vitalite or any other dairy free spread
Coconut or soya yogurt.

By the way I've never added butter or milk to veg

Push for an appointment with a dietician they might be phone appointments at the moment. They will advise you on enough calcium as vegan cheese doesn't have any, but things like ready brek soya yogurts do.

Be careful with soya as 50% of babies with CMPA are also allergic to soya.
