Baby safe stock cubes?

I'm keen to cook my son's food now he's moving on to solids, so wondered if any mumsnetters had come across stock cubes safe to use when cooking from six months up? I'm particularly thinking of salt.

I realise I can make stock from scratch, and will if I can't find an alternative, but I have a distinct lack of freezer space which is fast filling with portions of baby meals!

Picollo are the only brand that do them. But if you look at the salt content I think it’s the same as a quarter of an Oxo one.

I used to buy the very low salt ones. I think they were Kallo.

What kind of things are you making? Are you making for the family at the same time, or is it baby friendly only?

Piccolo make baby stock cubes (veg, chicken, beef) but I've also got Kallo low salt ones in the drawer so I must have read somewhere that they were ok, probably on here 😂
You can buy Piccolo stuff online direct from them and also Boots have them in their online shop. Not sure about in store as it's been ages since I've needed to buy any

It's much better to make stock or bone broth if you can get into a routine with it as the stock is so nutritious. You can make a good one in the instant pot or slow cooker if you have one. Obviously you might not be able to use hm stock all the time but it's worth making whenever you can.

To be very honest with you it's not something I would be concerned.

Do you feed your child bread? Bread has salt and so has cheese and some other foods. Important is quantity. When you cook don't add extra salt. You'll find that you'll be using less salt for yourself as well Smile Nowadays I don't add any salt on vegetables at all! (Carbs and protein do need it Confused)

Kallo very low salt is nice, piccolo sounds good as well. I agree that salt is in other stuff as well, but stock cubes are quite an easy way to cut down on needless salt, not always possible with stuff like bread where it all has it in.

I'd like to start moving towards cooking for the family where possible, so my thinking with the stock was making thick soups, stews and pasta sauces which we could salt at the table. DS could then have his alongside and perhaps save a couple of unsalted servings for lunches/dinners on nights we're eating something he's a bit young to adapt it.

I agree @Scaraffitoca ,using low salt stock cubes means you don't have to think so much about the salt in things that are good solid foods in themselves like cheese and bread. We don't add salt in cooking at all now but we do eat things that are inherently salty because they are nice! You can definitely taste the difference in stuff I've made suitable for DD and other things where I've used normal stock cubes.

I don’t bother with stock. When the recipe calls for it I just use water! There’s still salt even in the low salt ones. I’m sure it’s fine but I’d rather not, it’s not like my baby knows the difference in taste as he’s just excited to be trying different foods.
