Nappy smell solutions!

Hiya all,

I've been looking into different types of nappy bins, normal bins etc for once by baby girl is born. I live in a 1st floor studio flat (separate kitchen). I have the main bin in the kitchen but being just me and my partner at present we only get through one black sack worth of rubbish per week.

I know that once she is born, nappies are going to smell pretty quick, I can't just add to the one black sack a week or my flat will absolutely stink aha!

I've looked into the tommee tippee and angelcare nappy bins, but the refills are so expensive! Anyone used say a 5L bathroom bin with scented bin liners and found these work just as good?

I'm hoping to use a small pedal bin and some strong scented sacks and empty this bin everyday, use purely for her nappies, sicky wipes etc

Any advice will be amazing! Thanks Smile

I just use scented nappy sacks from asda and chuck them in the bin and I never smell anything x

Thanks hun, I got a pack from Aldi but don't think they are scented.... I do my weekly shop at ASDA so I'll get some, thanks Smile

Your welcome. I think mine are the smart price once. A pack of 300. I think as long as you empty your bin every 1 to 2 days all should be good.

I once changed my babys bum and could smell poo for ages and couldn't work out where it was. Anyway it was stuck on my fringe. Must of wiped my hair mid bum change 🤢🤢🤢

Oh no lol. I'm in a good routine when it comes to bum changes as I work with children aha so hopefully I won't do anything like that aha! Thank you, I'll definitely have a look when I go shopping this Friday Smile

The Ubbi diaper bin is a godsend. Expensive initially, but then you can just use normal bin liners so much cheaper than the ones with special refills in the long run.

We have one in our bedroom and there’s no smell at all, even with multiple dirty nappies sat in there for several days.

user875300 · 29/09/2020 01:51

I found that nappies didn't smell at all until I weaned dc.
Was ebf and had a sweet smell almost.
It's only now, 2 years down the line that they really smell.
Reusable nappies don't have that smell. I use a mixture.

Yummymummy2020 · 29/09/2020 05:33

We had a nappy wrapper used it a few days and put it gathering dust in the attic. We just have a normal bin now and use nappy sacks! We found the nappy wrapper was just clutter we didn’t need! I’m pregnant on our second and super sensitive to smells and I am happy with the normal bin, we do change it every day or two but no nappy smells in the bedroom! The scented nappy bags are great for preventing that!!!

Megan2018 · 29/09/2020 05:36

Use cloth!
Disposables are just vile and environmentally horrendous. Cloth is so cheap in the long run (after the initial outlay).
We don’t have any additional refuse and no smell.

BertieBotts · 29/09/2020 09:21

There is a Chicco bin which uses normal bin bags.

That said, we just use a normal lidded bin. Yes it smells when you open the lid to put a nappy in, but that only lasts a few minutes and TBH the room smells when a toddler has just pooed in it, regardless of how the nappy is disposed of.

We use nappy sacks for poo nappies.

Also you will find they don't really smell bad until they are eating a good amount of solids, breastmilk/formula poo just smells mild like porridge or popcorn!

BertieBotts · 29/09/2020 09:27

IME it doesn't matter whether the nappy sacks are scented or not. I think dog poo bags are also sometimes cheaper and they are the same thing. I used to use those free clear bags you get fruit and veg in too and they worked just as well.

FusionChefGeoff · 29/09/2020 09:31

Do you have an outdoor bin?? I used to just lob the nappy sack towards the door and next time I left the house put them straight into the outdoor bin. If I didn't get out that day then DH would do it when he got home before he took his shoes off!

Sophie2309 · 29/09/2020 09:32

Thank you everyone! I may hold off until she starts on solids then, and just see how we go on the smell aha. I have nappy sacks ready for poo nappies, so I'll just use the kitchen bin for now and see how we go!

To the member that mentioned cloth nappies... I really don't like those aha. My brother was put into them and I just remember him having a big bum all the time, mass amounts of washing too. I also don't have the room in my flat to have mass amount of washing either, my washing takes days to dry in the colder months so just isn't practical for me. I also work with children with a few in reusable ones and I find they smell. It may be something the parents were doing, but I just found they smelt all the time and too chunky. Much prefer disposable ones personally.

A bin with the refills is good for poo nappies, wet ones can sit in a normal bin for a while and don't really smell

countdowntobaby2020 · 29/09/2020 11:08

We've found the Tommee Tippee nappy bin to be a great investment and wouldn't be without. We were however finding it expensive after having to buy the refills which we seemed to be getting through like mad. After a recommendation on here we bought these alternative refills:

250m Nappy Bin Liners Compatible with Tomme Tippe Tec, Twist & Click, Simplee + Roll Cardboard for Storage and Refilling, Minimize Odours (250m + Tube) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B089XVQD8Q/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_DBWCFbXVR8PVK

Just checked on my amazon and I bought on 9th July and no where near half way yet so if you do go for a nappy bin id recommend these refills!

Sophie2309 · 29/09/2020 11:13

Thanks guys Smile it is on out for the poo nappies as I know wet ones won't smell too much unless there's loads and they have been sitting around for a while aha.

I had the Tommee Tippiee bin and hardly use it anymore and washed the bin and put it away. The refills are expensive. I use Boots' own brand nappy sacks which they have a lovely scent and is cheap. I think it was £1-£2 for about 100.

violetrosemummy · 29/09/2020 11:41

Tommee Tippee definitely. Easy to use, holds up to about 20 nappies before needs changing and no smells. Refills are expensive but I think it's worth the investment.

sbhydrogen · 29/09/2020 15:29

I find if you wrap up the nappies really well and then pop them in a nappy bag you can't really smell anything, even if they absolutely reek.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 29/09/2020 15:36

Newborn nappies don’t really smell. Sometimes a slightly older baby will do a stinker but they’d be fine in a normal bin once you’d rolled them up.

I had an Angelcare nappy bin. Biggest waste of time ever. Yeah it was handy initially, but then you had to change it and it was basically a festering snake of poo. Stopped using it.

It’s not until weaning and past 1 year that they start doing the “Jesus Christ has something died in here?!?” shits. By then I would just do as a PP did and throw them straight in the outside bin as it was only once a day.

DemolitionBarbie · 29/09/2020 15:40

Milk poo doesn't smell that bad. Once they're on solids you can usually drop the poo into a toilet (unless it's a really smudgy one!)

Just put them in the bin every day or two days at most and you'll be ok. You don't really need nappy bags, we use other food packaging like bread loaf bags. If you make the nappies into a little bundle stuck up with the tabs, it's fine.

Sophie2309 · 29/09/2020 16:39

Thanks for all the advice guysGrin !!

I'm going to see how I go with doing them up tight and using nappy sacks, hoping my baby doesn't have too much of a smelly bum aha!! Thanks again everyone Grin
