When to stop bedtime milk?

MY DS is just 2, he hasn't been bothered about bedtime milk for a while now, so guessing I can just stop giving it now?
He eats very well during the day, and I make sure he has yogurts, cheese,,, and milk with cereal during the day.
When did yours give up bedtime milk?

My 4 year old still has a coupe before bedtime, he drinks it downstairs then I brush his teeth then we go up to his room for books.

OverTheRainbow88 · 27/09/2020 19:24

By coupe I meant cup

Harrysmummy246 · 27/09/2020 19:31

Just before 2. Was the last BF to go after successfully and slowly night weaning. Shorter and shorter feeds, then only one boob. Then one night said, not tonight. 30s fuss then more bothered about books

My 3 year old still has it but she likes it as part of her routine. If she wasn’t bothered then I wouldn’t be too worried either.

I think at 2 you're supposed to be aiming for 500ml of milk (or equivalent made up of other dairy like cheese, yoghurt etc.) per day so if their diet is otherwise quite dairy rich you can ditch the bedtime milk.

DD is 3.6 and still has bedtime 'milk' but she has a dairy allergy and her dairy replacement milk is a good source of calcium and I would struggle to get the calcium into her just in food given she can't have cheese etc.

scrivette · 27/09/2020 19:38

It's a nice comforting drink to have, so I probably wouldn't stop it. I still like a glass of warm milk at bedtime!

Spied · 27/09/2020 19:40

Not long after 2nd Birthday.
If diet is good it's really not necessary.
More of a comfort thing for a lot of children.

Aahh99 · 27/09/2020 19:41

I have been giving it to him, but he never finishes it, a few mouthfuls at best.

My DD is nearly 3 and I think would lose her mind if we stopped her bedtime milk (cup before brushing teeth). She is milk obsessed though.

My DS is 5 and I don’t remember when we stopped it as routine. Probably about age 2. He still has it sometimes, but it’s definitely not every night

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 27/09/2020 20:21

We stopped about 18 months, mainly because he stopped drinking more than a few mouthfuls. Not harm in keeping it up longer if the child wants it (as long as teeth cleaned after) but didn’t seem worth the hassle if it’s not really wanted. Tbh, he doesn’t want to drink it much in the day either so he gets his calcium through yogurt, cheese, custard etc.

Only other consideration is dropping liquids close to bed can be helpful when thinking about night toilet training.

My daughter is 9 has has only just recently stopped insisting on bed time milk!

ScarMatty · 27/09/2020 22:11

2 year old milk obsessed boy so no chance of stopping for a long time.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 27/09/2020 22:16

My 16 and 13 year olds still have warm milk before bed most nights Grin
When 16 year olds anxiety is really bad and he can't sleep I make his on the hob with cinnamon and honey. (Usually its a microwave job)

AWryGiraffe · 27/09/2020 22:16

Mine is 20 months and has recently started refusing night time milk. I need to do some research into how much cheese and yoghurt is enough for her nutritional needs!

TofinoSurf · 27/09/2020 22:52

I'm 39 and still have a glass of milk most nights Grin

Absolutely fine to stop now, better for his teeth in fact.

I can't see my 2yo dropping it for a while yet but I know he will eventually :) now if only we could stop all the middle of the night crawling into my bed I'll be happy!

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/09/2020 07:07

@BertieBotts

Teeth are fine if it’s drunk for a cup and then teeth brushed afterwards.

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/09/2020 07:07

From a cup

Not problem with night time milk if from a cup and following by teeth brushing
BertieBotts · 28/09/2020 14:33

Sure, but who does night time milk before teeth? Surely you lose all the sleepy loveliness that way?

We do. Definitely miss out on those sleepy wonderful cuddles though
INeedNewShoes · 28/09/2020 19:16

I brush DD’s teeth in bed once she’s finished her milk. Probably not great wrt ingesting the fluoride in toothpaste but she hasn’t learned to spit it out yet anyway.
