I feel like i want to cry. My baby is 9 weeks, been a very easy baby, but recently sleep is a nightmare. She arches her back in my arms, puckers her lips and smacks them, keeps turning her head from side to side as if she cant get comfy, drooling. I just want her to fucking sleep! It takes hours now before she FINALLY settles. Shes fine when im walking with her to get her to sleep or sometimes if i start rocking her, wtf is going on!?!?!

Also she will go into a light sleep but then wakes herself up with the lip smacking etc

Sounds like reflux

itchyfinger · 26/09/2020 17:45

It doesnt sound like reflux. I would try a dummy.

It might also be CMPA (cows milk protein allergy) My youngest had this and it was a nightmare until we finally figured out what was wrong and I eliminated dairy from my diet.

FelicityPike · 26/09/2020 17:46

Have you tried a dummy? Or even a small feed?

YukoandHiro · 26/09/2020 17:47

Agree - reflux, possibly caused by CMPA. Are you breastfeeding? It sometimes shows later (eg 7-10 weeks) with bf.

Razpoot · 26/09/2020 17:47

I wondered that but i always hold her upright for 15 mins after any milk to keep it down, never had a problem until now and when it goes on for hours its so long after a meal that she needs fed again so i dont see how it could be coming up after so long?

Razpoot · 26/09/2020 17:48

Sorry should have mentioned im breastfeeding only

My baby arches her back when she wants to be put down. I just put her down and stroke her head and she's off in minutes. Have you tried that? White noise etc

idril · 26/09/2020 17:51

It sound like a normal baby doing normal baby things. It's hard when they move out of the sleepy newborn stage and seem to fight sleep.

I don't think they are actually fighting sleep but they just have a hard time switching off.

Is this night time, day time or both thing? Have you tried swaddling, a sling? cosleeping? Rocking? White noise?

MrsH497 · 26/09/2020 17:54

My little one is breastfed has reflux and we suspect CMPA. Try a dummy it really helps reflux. What does little one sleep in?
Could be a leap (the wonder weeks app and book are really good) there's one at 8/9 weeks.
The sicking up doesn't always have to be straight after they've fed I've found.
Our baby loves movement it's just something she is happy with, car, us rocking/walking, swing seat pram anything that moves!

White noise is amazing! We put it on and she relaxes if she's gotten worked up. Stroke her head gently let her hold onto your finger.

lemorella · 26/09/2020 17:55

Possibly a bit of trapped wind/ colic. We had a bit of an issue with that which seemed to disappear once we hit 12 weeks.

Agree with PP though it does sound like normal breastfed baby and they will go through phases with sleep Daffodil

Sounds like ordinary colic. The trouble is stress and crying can become cyclical and the more she cries, the more stressful you find it, this is picked up by the baby and they cry more.

Do you have someone to hand the baby to after feeding?
Try a warm bath together and then cuddle up. Forget about the idea that you had to get her to sleep; focus on just being calm together.
Infacol might help. Warm oil to massage her tummy might help. Putting her in a pram and going for a walk might help.

Giving her to someone else for an hour a few times a week will give you lone bath time and reduce stress in household. Feeding in bed and popping her down beside you whilst you watch television or read a book might help.
Frantically jiggling and trying to find reasons wont help. Nine week old babies cry. They cry more between 2 and 3 months than at any other time. Hard though it is, it passes.

@idril just the daytime about once or twice a day. Honestly shes a great baby but I'm posting this now as its one of those moments and I'm getting really fustrated trying to figure it out. She is always swaddled for bed. its odd because sometimes shes in a light dreaming sleep for example, wakes herself up head turning and lip smacking and arching, i rock her/get up and walk 3 steps and she dozes off again immediantly, sit back down, 5 mins go by then rinse and repeat. Sometimes she sorts herself out and settles if i just lay her down. I am at my wits end here listening to her constant lip smacking for the past two hours Sad im getting angry at myself for getting so upset.

@ginfilledcats sometimes that works, sometimes it doesnt, today being one of those cases! Its almost like she cant get comfortable

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I read it as i walked back and forward with her - i read it for so long that shes seems settled now and in a deep sleep! Phew!

I would look into CMPA too, it is worth eliminating dairy from your diet and seeing if it makes a difference (but it will take two weeks at least to see any difference so worth trying other things first). Like others have said, it could just be normal baby too.

idril · 26/09/2020 18:25

Definitely a very normal phase for daytime sleep at this age. Lota of babies never really nap properly at home and some just nap out and about. Just do what worka for now!

Razpoot · 26/09/2020 18:27

Nope no dummies, I'm trying to stay away from that habit. I'm wondering about the diary thing, praying that not it (i love my dairy!!)

Honestly - try the dummy. They can be a godsend.
