9 month old has stopped eating solids

Hi everyone. Just after some advice/reassurance. My 9 month usually eats everything thats in sight. He would eat 3 large meals a day and honestly just eat anything. But for the past 3 weeks he has went off solids. He will nibble at some toast and will still eat some things like banana or avocado and ate fish fingers today for the first time. But won't look at anything else. Usually loves his porridge or weetabix in the morning but again has no interest. Usually loves mash and veg but no interest. Is this just a phase? Will his appetite come back? Do I need to do something differently?

Hey, I'm pretty sure this is fairly normal around 9months. My little girl loved her food and ate quite a bit then around 8.5months she would barley eat anything! She was still breastfed on demand and would have a lot of milk and started almost becoming fussy with her food.

It was just a phase and I just chilled out about it and thought, if she is hungry she will eat?! Took the pressure off, still offered her a variety of food and just let her pick and choose. I think she was probably a bit uncomfortable with teething and actually they don't need as much as we think they do?!

Around a year old she started eating much better and now she is 14 months old eats great.

Of course if your really worried then contact your HV but I was also told that 'food before 1 is just for fun' they will still be getting all the nutrients they need from milk/formula Smile

They go through lots of phases and as long as he’s still getting enough milk if he’s fussy here and there I wouldn’t over think it. Often teething can put them off food or if they’re coming down with something. You’re not doing anything wrong, at this stage it’s experimental to figure out what works for him.

They also can just get abit bored of the food so you could try him with other things to keep it interesting. As much as they’re babies remember they’re a lot like us some days we are not as hungry as others and other days the thought of certain foods just don’t appeal.

You sound like you’re doing a great job!

@horsecrazymumtobe thank you for your reply. Definitely need to take the pressure off because I get worried at meal times now and don't want him to pick up on that either. Hopefully this will pass and he will enjoy his food again x

@BF2748 thank you for your reply. I have thought he could be bored with some of the foods so I'm offering some new things hopefully he will start to enjoy his food again. I thought it was just teething related at the start but don't think so anymore. I will keep trying x

Mine did this too :) I also think teething can be part of it.

And things that are easy for him to eat by himself!

It was about this stage for us that DS refused to be spoonfed and would only eat finger food.

@mynameiscalypso I've been offering more finger foods and he does seem to enjoy them better at the minute. Did it stay like that?lol

So far...DS is 13 months and will occasionally tolerate a spoon but generally eats everything with his hands. Nursery sent me a picture of him eating a bowl of rice pudding with his hands last week which was very messy!

@mynameiscalypso Oh well that sounds exactly what my boy would enjoy lol thank you
