Baby can only drink ready made liquid formula

My Daughter is 6 months old and has been drinking the ready made Aptamil bottles since about 3 months. She was awful and windy on the powder.

I thought she might be stronger by 6 months, so gave her one bottle of powdered formula yesterday and she was absolutely AWFUL the whole day and night. She was whingy, screaming, writhing around from a couple of hours after drinking it.

We must be spending about £30 a week on the ready made bottles. How are we going to get her on to the powder formula instead?? Has anyone got any tips or managed to do this?

Have you tried the SMA powder? We used to use Cow and Gate (think this is the same as Aptamil) with the Perfect Prep machine but it seemed to get really frothy. SMA doesn’t seem to bubble up as much so might help the wind?

I hadn't thought of trying another powder!! If she can't get used to this I will definitely try it out!

I did half powder, half liquid in 1 bottle today and again she's really not happy.

I left it to settle so no bubbles too.

It's crazy how much difference it makes having the ready made.

@WeEE have you tried giving infacol before the feed? My sister had to do this with my nephew otherwise he would get gassy and uncomfortable. I think in the end my sister changed to a diary free formula and he settled a lot better on this

We still have some Infacol in the cupboard from when she was little, so that could come in handy!

We gave our first Daughter lactose free formula because she couldn't get used to normal powder and she was like a different baby overnight. Have been tempted to try a dairy free or lactose free again, but worried she won't be able to tolerate dairy for years like our eldest.

Have you tried mixing it with a spoon instead of shaking it? My first ds was the same and using the ready made formula and wouldn’t take powder as it would give him a belly ache. I started by doing 1oz of powder and mixing with a spoon and then adding ready made. I then upped it by 1oz every 2/3 days until it was all powder. My moto was always stir and never shake 😂

Thanks @Sunshineandsparkle I did give it a good shake to be fair 😂, but then left it to settle for ages until all the bubbles had gone.

It's a nightmare. I'm going to have to sell the house so I can afford the ready made 😩

My daughter was exactly the same - I even tasted both myself & the liquid is so much nicer/creamier.

We even went on a holiday & had to share out the 1litre cartons (it’s the cheapest way to buy it) across 4 adults luggage allowance!

As she’s six months, won’t she be weaning soon (so you’ll be spending less money on milk anyway?) Curious as my DS is five months and am starting to think about weaning!

WeEE · 17/09/2020 09:39

@newmum234 yes, we will be starting weaning soon!

I think with my first Daughter that when we weaned her, she would have milk less often, but she suddenly started drinking 8 ounces per bottle (when it had previously been 4), so it was about the same amount, we'll probably a little bit less. But it should definitely reduce by about 9/10 months I think. I really can't remember properly 😂.

But ideally, she will be drinking a lot less really soon.

So you know anyone else with a baby on different formula? Most would be happy to scoop out 4 scoops for you to try a small bottle of a different brand to see how she reacts. Save buying whole tubs.

Have you thought about trying comfort formula? Ds was horribly windy and constipated on the normal cow and gate formula but was a different man on the comfort version! Some of the ingredients are partially broken down so it is easier for their little tummies to digest.
