Bruising on 2 year old

Please go easy on me here as I don't know whether to be concerned or not about this.

Parents of toddlers - can you please look at this photo (not a good photo but the best I could get) of my son's bruises on his leg? Do your kids get bruises like this from just playing? It's the fact that there's a line of little round bruises that worries me. Please be honest - I really hope I'm just bring silly for being concerned so please feel free to say so if that's the case!

If this is real it looks like fingerprints and you need to get help. Pronto.

legalseagull · 15/09/2020 21:05

My 2yr and 1yr constantly get tiny little bruises on their legs like this. I wouldn't be concerned from the bruising alone. Do you have other concerns?

Talcott2007 · 15/09/2020 21:13

Its hard to say from the photo - Dd even at a 4 is regularly covered in bruises on her legs/shins especially - she is very active and still hasn't learnt to pay attention to where she is going. For her bruises seem to be like buses she will not have any for a few days then seem to sprout 6 new ones all at once. Including times where they have been lined up a bit like your photo that were definitely from normal play/accidents.

However the fact that you are asking this question in the 1st place means there must be more to story that is making you think they are not normal though. Listen to your instincts.

My youngest is always covered in bruises and has been since he was upright. He even manages to get bruises on his bum! He is almost 7 now and still the same.

Why are you concerned? Do you think someone is hurting him?

twoticksvix · 15/09/2020 21:19

My DTs 3yo both usually have a variety of bruises on their legs, when playing they're always bumping into things and each other! What are you concerned about op, do you think someone is hurting him?

Suzi888 · 15/09/2020 21:23

You must have concerns...

cosmicsweets · 15/09/2020 21:24

are the bruises appearing after he is being looked after by someone in particular?

Willow4987 · 15/09/2020 21:24

Hmmmmm it’s difficult to tell from the pic but my DS is always covered in bruises on his knees and shins but he does have a habit of running every where he can at full pelt and falling over

Are you asking because you’re concerned someone’s hurting him?

HappyInL0nd0n · 15/09/2020 21:26

Either of mine would have had those bruises because their dad constantly dangled them upside down to their great delight (and we all bruise easily in my family).

But if you're worried, that's not good. Take action if you're even mildly worried. Better to overreact than under react if your kid's welfare is at stake. Good luck x

fallfallfall · 15/09/2020 21:30

does he slide down the stairs on his tummy?

chickenortheegg · 15/09/2020 21:32

I would suspect little fingers. Is he at a nursery?

surreygirl1987 · 15/09/2020 21:34

I just don't know what to think. He goes to full time nursery. He's recently been quite aggressive with other children though and today at the playground I saw him go up to a complete stranger (a slightly older girl) and pull her hair hard. He's been shoving kids at nursery too. I was already worried about this and then I saw the bruises and I don't know what to think. I'm really worried but I don't know if I'm being stupid. My husband thinks it's nothing and that I'm being paranoid so I guess I'm looking for unbiased opinions.

It’s a completely normal place for a child to get bruises but that look like it could be finger point bruising from been gripped too tight. It’s difficult to tell from the photo.

Are you worried

ApolloandDaphne · 15/09/2020 21:37

The front of the legs is a very normal place to get bruises like that. I would say there are no concern about those marks. I am an ex child protection SW and have seen many bruises in my line of work. These would not worry me at all.

Lockdownseperation · 15/09/2020 21:37

.. Are you worried that he is being harmed? Where do you think the bruising is from?

ApolloandDaphne · 15/09/2020 21:37

The bruises look too linear to be fingertips.

That behaviour is all very normal for a toddler.
surreygirl1987 · 15/09/2020 21:39

Okay having re-read the replies from you all, it sounds like this isn't massively a red flag and that bruises like this can and do happen. He is a very active little boy and has spent a lot of time at the playground recently. If I'd seen these bruises during lockdown when he wasn't at nursery I'm sure I would have thought nothing of them. I guess I was already upset from firstly being told he'd shoved children at nursery today, and then seeing him pull a girl's hair at the playground ... When I saw the bruises I just freaked out. It's just that they're little round ones all in a line and I just can't shake the image of a hand causing them.

Either you're being paranoid, or my oldest DS was being continuously abused for 5 yearsGrin

Newchapter2020 · 15/09/2020 21:40

Young children regularly do get bruises there...however they seem a bit odd, there's a pattern and it looks like an equal gap.

surreygirl1987 · 15/09/2020 21:42

Thanks everyone. @ApolloandDaphne especially thank you as your experience has reassured me a little.

OP posts:
Suzi888 · 15/09/2020 21:42

Could it be another child’s hand?

ApolloandDaphne · 15/09/2020 21:54

They would be far too spaced out for a child's hand. Usually fingertip bruising is seen on fleshy parts of the body., the shins are bony and hard. It would a lot of pressure to bruise the shins with finger tips. There would also have to be thumb mark on the back of the leg. Those bruises are just legs being bumped against hard surfaces imo.

surreygirl1987 · 15/09/2020 21:57

Thanks. I was worried about fingers. But I've calmed down a little now. Thank you.
