How do you stop breastfeeding at around a year?

So I know babies need breastmilk or formula until they're 1. At ten months, ds has three meals a day but still lots of breatmilk, maybe 6 times a day? (Including 1 or 2 at night).

Does it suddenly drop down in the next two months? He's only just started crawling so not really doing snacks or anything. When he wants milk, he really wants milk!

How does it reduce during the day in the next two months?

Watching with interest as I have a 15 month old I really want to start getting away from the boob! She feeds at 2am, 5am and then wants more as soon as she’s finished her breakfast.

Who says it stops at a year? Grin DS never got that memo.
If you are formula feeding you can move on to cows milk in a cup, and if breastfeeding you can keep going until your DC self weans. There's no need to move on to cows milk (unless you want to).

My DS loved the breast and I was really worried as I knew I wanted to try for another IVF baby soon after he was 1, so I had to have finished breast feeding.
I might weaned at 11 months, and after he grumbled twice in the first night, he was absolutely fine and I was flabbergasted.
Then at 1 year and 1 week, he loved the taste of cows milk so much that one evening I sat down to feed him at bed time and he pushed me away and looked for a bottle of milk.
I was devastated and I never fed him again, but it was really natural - he just reached the developmental stage that he no longer needed me for that. (sob)

Ps currently feeding my second DS to sleep as I type (so it was worth it)

Ds2 would have bf all day and night given the chance at age 1.
When he was 15 months I’d had enough, and went cold turkey. I had to express for a bit to ease engorgment, and dh had to do bedtimes, but it actually wasn’t that bad.
Incidentally, he stopped waking in the night with 2 weeks of stopping (as did ds1 when I stopped feeding him at 8 months)

Grin my three never got that memo either.
To be fair, I’d vaguely expected first born to cut down from 6 months to 1 year and it was only when he showed no sign of losing interest that I looked into it and it was completely biologically normal for him to keep feeding!

Well, you don't have to stop at a year :)

If it's working for you you can just carry on. You know when it's time to stop IME.

Hmmm, in a similar position. DS is 18m tomorrow and still on the boob at night and in the morning.

Nightweaned him a couple months ago, but he loves the boob so much!

I take the eldest to gymnastics and swimming in the week so DH does bedtime and gives him a cup of milk (cows) which he polishes off.

Tried weaning him a couple weeks ago and he was miserable, so will give it another couple months then try again!!!

I started mix feeding at around 8mo I think, just swapped 1 feed at a time for a bottle. Once they were 1y and could have normal milk I watered it down as well to increase fluid intake by stealth as neither of them ever drank any water.

My 5yo still has a bottle of watered down milk in the morning! It's the only thing standing between her and dehydration Hmm

It didn't reduce for my DS until he was 2 and to be honest it only really started reducing then because I didn't want to breastfeed all day every day. Now we only nurse 3-4 times a day which is nice.

Do you give the cow's milk in a bottle? Interesting!

I love breastfeeding I just genuinely thought they started dropping feeds as preferred solids. When does it become comfort/drink as opposed to part of his meal?

Also he is quite picky with how he breastfeeds (only likes certain positions) so makes it tricky when we go out. I'd happily still feed at night for example.
