Hi all first time mum looking for some advice as can't get a appointment to get little man weighed.

He's 6.5 months old and his routine is as follows;

7am 6onz milk
0830am readybrek with fruit (probably 4 tablespoons)
1100am 6 onz milk
1230pm finger foods usually three or four different types of foods like veg and fruit omlette bread pasta rusks ect with a yogurt
1430 6on feed
1630 half pouch of purée with finger foods usually fruit or veg and pudding if still interested
1900 8onz milk for bed

He then sleeps through till his morning milk and has water in cup when eating solids.

Please be honest and any advice will be appreciated

Is he sleeps through I wouldn’t change a thing!! Nothing!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 14/09/2020 20:17

Why do you think he's overweight?

Lockdownseperation · 14/09/2020 20:46

This!! Milk tends to be higher calories than food. If anything I would be worried that he is not getting enough milk. When he drops to less than 17oz of milk a day you will need to start giving vitamins.

You don’t need an appointment to get him weight just a set of bathroom scales. Weight yourself and then weigh yourself and the baby and he weighs the difference. Then plot his weight in his red book. If your not great with graphs then if you send he a photo of his graph and his weight I will tell you his centile.

Rusks are more sugary than most adult biscuits so I would try and avoid them.

DS was eating at least 2 x that amount and not overweight so I wouldn't worry

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 14/09/2020 21:31

I was told that babies and toddlers self regulate their food intake until about 2 years old, after which they can start overeating for pleasure and need their portions monitoring. I certainly wouldn’t be worried about portions for a 6.5 month old.

charlieeeee · 15/09/2020 08:01

Because he's 21lb according to my bathroom scales and that seems a lot.. he's a tall baby and everyone comments home big he is but apart from his legs his body is trim.

He is getting enough milk for sure I am not worried about that

Fretting about babies weight is not generally a good thing. He’s sleeping, he’s content.
9.5 kg puts him squarely onto 50th percentile at 6.5 months. If he’s particularly long, he’s more likely to be under rather than over average height/weight ratio - but not at concerning levels.

I’d suggest throwing out weighing at his age. Starting him on a path of weight obsession isn’t healthy. Feed him good foods. Enjoy him being healthy. Babies aren’t meant to be skinny.

Persipan · 15/09/2020 08:29

In my experience, the bathroom scales methods is wildly inaccurate, so I wouldn't worry overmuch based on that.

Alarae · 15/09/2020 08:37

My daughter is the same age and still has four 8 oz bottles, along with two whole pouches plus a few finger food crisps/wafers at lunch.

She's very roly poly but as far as I'm aware if she doesn't want to eat she will turn her head away, so I don't force anything.

If she's still a bit chunky after she's moving around then I'll reassess, but at the moment she's a happy little thing so I'm not changing our routine with her.

charlieeeee · 15/09/2020 08:43

@CherryPavlova I am asking as I did an online calculator and it said obese so with my post natal anxiety yes I am worried. If you say 50th percentile then that's perfect as that is what he was at birth. I have no had him weighed since he regained his birth weight.

And no above 9.2kg is 98th centile I just looked on two sites

Sounds perfectly fine to me. Is he crawling? They lean out a lot when they start moving.

CherryPavlova · 15/09/2020 09:03

which site are you using? RCGP site growth calculator for boys 0-4 years ?
21lb is 9.5 kg that is definitely 50 percentile on WHO/RCGP charts.

www.rcpch.ac.uk/resources/uk-who-growth-charts-0-4-years

BMI isn't really a thing for babies.

mynameiscalypso · 15/09/2020 09:08

He sounds perfect. DS was definitely on the bigger side (90th percentile) and had more milk at that age and less solid food (so was probably getting more calories overall). It sounds like you're doing a great job. DS has definitely slimmed down now he's 13 months and crawling/cruising. I know it's hard but you have to trust that your baby can self regulate and if they're hungry, they'll eat. When they're not hungry, they won't.

charlieeeee · 15/09/2020 10:32

@CherryPavlova it's called social science statistics - but Thankyou for the link I'll have a look :)

Thankyou everyone I feel a lot better and no he isn't crawling yet he hated tummy time as a newborn so we have just mastered rolling and he's up on his knees ready to go but not quite there yet

Thanks again everyone

My son is a CHONKY nine month old. He eats well, sleeps HARD and has all these cute lil rolls.

I know that every day he gets fresh vegetables, a balanced meal, healthy shnacks and a controlled amount of milk (3 7oz bottles).

I am not shoving doughnuts down his throat or overfeeding him, so I am comfortable with his chonky body. You will know if anything you're doing is really contributing to his size, as long as you're not overdosing him with sugar all should be good.

But if youre concerned talk to your health visitor or GP for some advise!

Some babies just love food!

charlieeeee · 16/09/2020 11:07

So using an app and he has gone up on centiles he is not in the 50th

I feel that he eats healthy wil double check for sugars though Thankyou.
