My son has a bruise on his penis

DS is almost 2. We've just noticed a bruise all down one side, what could cause this?! I would've thought it would be protected in his nappy.

You poor thing, what a worry. Is there any reason to suspect someone may have hurt him? He could simply have been playing with his nappy off and bumped himself.

Howallergic · 12/09/2020 19:48

I hope you're not long waiting to see a doc! It must be a worry, but hopefully it's nothing at all.

Snowbeau · 12/09/2020 19:56

No reason to think anything bad has happened. He goes to childcare though and we work a lot.

You’re in the best place you can be, I hope he’s ok, accidents happen so easily and it may be that you didn’t see him trip and hurt himself or something.

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 12/09/2020 20:04

This sounds horrible! You must be beside yourself with worry! My first thought was whether he could have slipped on a climbing frame and landed badly? If he was wearing thin trousers and a fresh nappy there wouldn't be much protection. No idea if the fever is related and I have no medical knowledge, but could it be mumps or glandular fever? Or him playing with his penis very roughly and accidentally pinching it? Be prepared for safeguarding concerns to be raised, but I doubt that SS would get involved immediately. Also remember that safeguarding procedures are there to protect the child, not to cast suspicions on the parents. If this injury was caused with malicious intent it is so, so important to know! I hope you get some answers soon!

Letmegetthisrightasawoman · 12/09/2020 20:06

Just a thought: could he have collided on a slide with another child? E.g. he was sitting at the bottom of the slide with his legs apart and another child went down it and their foot hit him in his crotch? You'd expect him to cry but you might not have realised where he was hurt until the bruise became apparent.

This was posted around same time... could be the same with your son?

custardbear · 12/09/2020 20:14

I hope all is ok OP. Best wishes and Thanks

JacobReesMogadishu · 12/09/2020 20:16

Hope he’s ok, I’m sure they’ll work out what’s wrong and sort it.

Snowbeau · 12/09/2020 20:22

Still no update, waiting for the dr to assess.
Yes could well be unnoticed bump or fall. He goes to childcare so we don't have him with us all the time

I'll never forgive myself for working if something awful has happened.

My 2 year old has had several small bruises on his penis. He's extremely active (feral tbh!) and I think he traps/pinches his foreskin when he's climbing something he shouldn't be and he gets a little bruise

He's had them after he's spent all day with me and I've certainly not harmed him in any way so I think he's just too rough sometimes

He has had surgery on his penis previously due to hypospadias so I'm not sure if it's just more fragile than the average boy's penis but I've never been told that's the case so I don't think so

Try not to jump to the worst conclusion, it's probably something totally innocent

SnowdropFox · 12/09/2020 20:35

Sending you an unmumsnetty hug op. Glad you called 111, hope you get some answers soon. He must be exhausted and a little confused about what's going on!

Malachite234 · 12/09/2020 20:40

Hope he is okay.Flowers

@Snowbeau I'll never forgive myself for working if something awful has happened. Whilst I totally understand why you're feeling this way, please try not to go down that road. You go to work and your child goes to childcare. Millions of families have the same set-up. Giving up work to look after him FT because there is a miniscule chance that he will be harmed by a carer would be allowing yourself to be ruled by fear. You cannot protect him against all risk and it is unhealthy to (feel you ought to) do so. It is far, far more likely that there is a medical or accidental cause. You're so upset because you care so much, which shows what a lovely mum you are Flowers

Hope he’s ok op, please don’t beat yourself up!

Kay1341 · 12/09/2020 21:12

I thought my boy had had an incident in nursery when he came home with a swollen penis with a red mark on one side. Ended up in A&E and it turned out to be balinitis, the doc says it can start very suddenly. I wouldn't jump into worst case scenarios before the doctor has had a chance to look at it.

BikerChick91 · 12/09/2020 21:18

Not exactly the same, but as a young child I had a very bad injury to one side of my labia (bruising and bleeding and a deep
slice) that was due to me trying to climb over a chair, losing my footing and landing very heavily on the chair back. Luckily it was witnessed by a parent and a friend and was easily explained to the medics (although I was examined for abuse too and obviously it was quickly discounted).

I’d imagine something similar could easily happen to a little boy on a climbing frame, slide, during leapfrog etc. I know you must be worried sick but please try and take reassurance that there could be a perfectly innocent explanation. I really hope that He and you are both ok Flowers

Snowbeau · 12/09/2020 21:42

Thank you so much for the kind words. I was a bit thrown by the comment about a full child protection investigation and it meant I panicked.

Referral to urology and they do think its a bruise but we need to monitor.

Going home now.

And yes they've done a SS referral. I wouldn't expect any less tbh. I just want him safe.

Howallergic · 12/09/2020 21:51

Poor little guy. Hope it doesn't pain him too much.

slipperywhensparticus · 12/09/2020 21:52

Mine had a bruise from the nappy itself it had a mesh and his tip got stuck in the mesh he was whining and we just thought wet nappy an pulled the nappy off (as you do) and that's how he got a bruise

LovingLola · 12/09/2020 22:26

Glad you’re going home.
Try to sleep tonight and not get caught up in the what-ifs

Snowbeau · 13/09/2020 17:52

No change to it today, he seems ok in himself though!

OP posts:
OverTheRainbow88 · 13/09/2020 19:16

Glad he’s ok in himself, I guess it’s like any bruise in that it may take a while to fade.

How are you feeling?

MadeForThis · 13/09/2020 19:24

Glad he's ok and been checked out.
