Daughter with itchy bottom

My 8 year old daughter is suffering for a second night with an itchy bum. It's not worms, she's had those before, though I have some tablets from before and could give her one of those anyway?

How can I help, I've washed her with water and tried Eurax cream, that worked last night, But tonight it didn't work and she's crying with it as she's so tired.

Any suggestions of how to help?

I found that putting a sticky cream like Metanium (v good) around the anus catches the worms, so they either don't come out to lay or get stuck before they can. Hence no itching, since it is the laying that causes the itching.

And turning your washing machine temp down to 30 is going to do nothing but encourage them. (I am often seen tutting in the washing powder aisle, muttering things about low temperatures not killing lice or worms....I think I need to get a life).

we had something called Vermox or something (a syrup) prescribed by the doctor, so I gave DD some on Friday night and she vomited all over her bed.

Nice.

Any ideas of other worming products I could use to not make her sick?!

Elibean · 08/10/2007 17:11

Suspected tw once with dd, and gave her Ovex liquid: she loved it . She was nearly 3 at the time.

SpiritualKnot · 09/10/2007 05:48

It is worms! Thought it wasn't at first as last time they were more visible! But last night I saw one.

Just got to wait now for the tablet to work. Daughter seemed quite pleased to have got to the bottom of the problem...haha!!

Would you definitely see them in the poo? Like little white threads? Or is an itchy bottom enough to go by? My dd often has an itchy bottom but she's got eczema and I generally put it down to that.

DumbledoresGirl · 09/10/2007 14:14

I am wondering this too IF. Since reading this thread, I have been suffering in a certain way to the extent that I was up reading medical encyclopaedias at one this morning. I have no reason to suspect worms except that my cats are eating like they have never seen food before. But that would be a different worm in that case wouldn't it?

DumbledoresGirl · 09/10/2007 14:17

Also, does the itching have to be only at night? If there is itching during the day, does that rule out worms? (Can't believe I am asking this!)

imaginaryfriend · 09/10/2007 14:21

It's ok, DG, you're among friends.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 09/10/2007 14:56

With my DD the itching has always been at bedtime or during the night only.

I didn't know about Ovex being in liquid form too. It's hard persuading DD to chew on the tablet.

Elibean · 09/10/2007 15:47

DG, you are not alone. I spent weeks itching and obsessing after reading a threadworm thread on MN whilst pg (and therefore in a fragile mental state) because dd1 had on/off itching of nether regions. She has eczema too, and was just potty trained to boot.

DH has never let me forget it, though he took his Ovex like a good DH at the time just in case

DumbledoresGirl · 09/10/2007 16:25

LOL, it is like when you get one of those nit letters home from school, isn't it? My head always feels itchy at just the thought that someone with nits has been near me.

Hopefully tonight will be itch free and I can forget my latest neurosis.

But we are talking threadworms aren't we? Cats don't get threadworms do they? You see, the only reason I am obsessing about having worms is an itchy bottom (could be anything), 2 cats who never seem to be full, and reading this thread. I have no other reason to suspect I have them so if you take away the link of the cats' odd behaviour, that would mean I was OK.

Desperately trying to convince myself here!

So that link says there is no link between pets and humans wrt threadworms. Think I might be off the hook.

ProfYaffle · 09/10/2007 16:40

Exactly how up close and personal do you have to get to see the worms in the poo? dd1 was complaining of an itchy, I couldn't see anything in her poo but I was peering down the loo from a distance, do you have to ...um ... rummage? The itching has gone so it can't be worms, can it? can it? It would get worse if it was, wouldn't it? wouldn't it? [panicky emoticon]

Blandmum · 09/10/2007 16:42

If the infestation is bad enough you will see part of them poking out of the turd and wiggling!

Hence, 'The turd that waves back'

ProfYaffle · 09/10/2007 16:44

Clearly I meant she had an itchy bum.

No waving was going on, hopefully we're in the clear. [relief] Thanks

Oh God, this is vile isn't it? I'm hoping because the itching stopped she's OK.

HysterSister · 09/10/2007 19:28

You can always apply a piece of sellotape to the itch (in the dark, so as not to alert them). They will stick to it if out and about doing wormy things (ie, laying eggs).

Elibean · 09/10/2007 20:36

Aha. I've always wondered whether I was paranoid (dh's sure I was) or whether we were wormy, last summer. dd was still using potty, and I did treat her (all of us, with variety of meds) and not one worm did I spot...waving or otherwise...in spite of daily, obsessive, pregnancy-psychosis type staring at poo.

O God, according to you, sKerry, dh was right

Elibean · 09/10/2007 20:37

that would be 'DH was sure I was'
