Is it ok for 7 month old to have weetabix twice a day?

7 month old suffers badly from reflux despite weaning.

He currently has fruit puree and weetabix for breakfast and loves it.

Lunch is 1/2 a pouch of veg puree and some finger foods - grated cheese, ham, cucumber or brocoli etc and a petit filous

Dinner we struggle with. He has been having more puree or blended chilli/bolognese etc but never eats much.

Yesterday he was more sick than normal (also teething) so decided to go bland at night and just gave him a plain weetabix. He munched the lot and slept so well Grin..... so now I'm wondering if there is any issue with making this a regular thing? He ate waaaaaay more than a normal dinner.

Has anyone ever mixed weetabix with anything savory lol?

I wouldn't. I'd accept that he is getting used to new tastes and allow him to explore many flavours for dinner and for him to eat as much or as little as he likes, knowing hang his milk before bed would fill him up.

If I'd allowed my daughter she would have lived off fruit pouches...

I have been giving my DD (13 months) porridge at dinner time (She has weetabix at breakfast). She's really fussy at dinner so I figure at least she's eaten something filling. Can you try something similar? I'd be a little concerned that 2 weetabix may be too much for his wee bowels.

Does he need three meals a day? I thought that it was generally around 9/10 months when they went up to that. Certainly DS only had one small meal a day at 7 months and he's a very good eater. That said, I don't see anything wrong with plain weetabix per except that it's not a particularly varied diet. At this age, food should be about exploring different tastes and textures and eating the same thing twice a day doesn't really help with that.

I always went with something my babies‘ knew and liked for dinner so it wasn’t too heavy or unknown. I think they need something a little filling to sleep but not heavy to digest so if weetabix is his thing go for it! We experimented more at lunch after a morning nap with lots of textures and new foods. I think anything that a reflux baby likes and keeps down is good. I always think the most important thing is to create a good association with food aka it is a good thing if a baby has already suffered with reflux.

The nappies, God, weetabix nappies are the worst. The little fibres stick to the skin..I always dreaded weetabix nappies when I worked with kids.

I have always done weetabix then porridge or rice cereal if they have it again

You could always swap meals about and give him weetabix for his evening meal and try him on evening meal foods at lunch time? I found as babies mine were too tired to eat well in the evening and were more likely to try new things at lunch time. I would be a bit worried about giving weetabix twice a day regularly as it is high fibre, why not porridge or eggs/cheese on toast for breakfast?

Findahouse21 · 09/09/2020 21:54

Could you give the wheetabix at night and more variety at breakfast and lunch

yecannyshoveyergranny · 09/09/2020 21:55

If it keeps him happier I'd say do it but the fibre may bulk him up! Porridge might be better? You can always give him that alongside bits of broccoli or cheese etc.
At 8 months my baby eats three meals a day.

Why not try baby rice with veggie purée for dinner and some finger foods. I do this as the finger foods wouldn’t keep my baby full (she is just learning to eat them and doesn’t always manage etc) she makes more mess then getting the food in her mouth. So i let her feed herself and I put some in of the finger foods. Then after a bit I give her purée veggie w rice. And then again I offer her some green beans to hold and much in between bites of baby purée.

Mine had reflux too and I used to do what others have suggested and flip the meals around.
Breakfast would be something “lunchy” like toast with egg, omelette fingers, cheese on toast, beans on toast etc
Lunch would be the “main meal” so fish pie, cottage pie, spag Bol, jacket potato cold meat and salad etc
Dinner would be weetabix or porridge

Would offer fruit or yog after each meal

Worked for us and most importantly got decent sleep! Think we managed to go back to “normal” meals when DD was about 14 months old.

Another vote for mixing the meals around. Cheese, ham, veg sticks, yoghurt (fruit) at breakfast, the bolognese and stuff at lunch, and wetabix in the evening. ie putting the stuff he is least likely to eat in the middle, with stiffche eatsxwell either side of it.
