When can a toddler wear wellies?

DS started walking properly a couple of weeks ago. He's generally quite stable, but isn't fully confident outside yet. Is it too soon to buy him wellies? We're having a UK staycation next week and lots of rain forecast and thinking they could be useful but I'm not sure whether they need to be better at walking before such a bulky shoe?

Two weeks is along time in walking. Does he have any normal shoes yet or just padded slipper Types? Wellies mean he can least stand on the ground when it’s wet without soaking through baby shoes. It’s not like he be walking miles in them and they are very cheap in tiny sizes.

My 18 month old started walking during lockdown and has had shoes for the last 3-4 months which he loves. We got him some wellies at the weekend which he insisted wearing to the park despite the fact he can't walk in them. I think we are just going to practice at home and hopefully he will get the hang of it before the rain comes but I'd be reluctant to buy any before he'd been walking for a few months as he's so much steadier now than he was, although appreciate that you can't move your holiday so maybe just pick up some second hand or cheap and see how he does?

I have no idea. My little one has been walking for 4 months and is hopeless in them.

You can get new walkers ones at Asda (not sure about other supermarkets) for around a tenner. I think some can be quite heavy for them when they first start walking, but DS was fine in them a month or so after starting to wear shoes. They also have a printable foot measure sheet on there.

My 17 month old has been walking for a while and is very happy in wellies. Shoes were much more of a battle but we found some she liked and bought 3 pairs.

We recently bought our 2 year old wellies and he won't try them on for love nor money! So you can buy them but no guarantee he will wear them just a heads up! Smile

My DD is 3, I can't remember when, after she started walking, she wore wellies! What I can recommend after trying a few different types is to get Crocs wellies! They are so super light in comparison to any others we tried (her feet grow so fast). Much easier for her to walk in. I wish I'd discovered them for her first pair as I remember those being super clunky and heavy.

Another vote for the Asda first walker wellies, but even with those it was about 3 months after starting walking before she was properly stable in them, but she could potter before that in them with a bit of help

Try them on him inside and see what happens. My DD struggled with wellies for a long time after she could walk and fell over a lot. Get them a size big and stick on really thick socks in the meantime!
