Hi Donna
It's great that you're interested in real nappies. They really are soooo much better than disposables in almost every way.

There's lots of choice out there and also quite a bit of conflicting advice and information.
One of the best places you can start is to look at specialised websites like The Nappy Lady here or KittyKins here
They have really good information about the different types and washing and care etc. Then they'll sell you the products.

The basics you'll need are some nappies; (about 20 if you want to wash everyday, about 30 if you wash every other day), about 4 wraps to go over them (the waterproof bit), some liners and a bucket to put them in when dirty.

Washing them is easy. You don't need anything special, you can just do it in your machine like everything else. Many people wash nappies separately, but after doing a spin to remove the dirty water, I actually wash them in with all my other laundry.

Don't worry about using them when out and about. There's no difference with disposables except that you put them in a waterproof bag and take them home rather than binning them.

A good way to start is to buy a starter pack. (Try the two websites above). They are cheap sets with a couple of different nappies and wraps so that you can try them out and see what suits you.
When I first started I just used a couple a day and never when I went out or at night. Then I gradually increased my usage to full time as I gained in confidence.

My personal recommendations are Tots Bots Nappies, Easy Peasy Bumble nappies and Motherease wraps.

Once you start, you'll love it.
Good luck!!

Hiya

Cloth is great - it just seems scary because there are sooo many options! With the right amount of nappies you only need to wash every 2-3 days, you just have a slightly bigger changing bag when you go out and bring the nappies home with you. You don't need to soak them or anything, just store them in a lidded bucket and do a rinse cycle before the wash.

If you email bumfluffnappies at gmail dot com (change it into an email address), I can talk you through the various types of nappies and help you work out what will suit you best.

Hi, I just started about a month ago and can't believe i didn't start earlier.I have no intention to use them full time, still use disposable at night and if i'm going out for a while. check out www.eenee.com. They have a pouch that you can put anything absorbant in. I use the microfibre inserts and change the towel every 4 hours ish. I even used them without a liner and the poo came off and disappeared without a trace! I have also have one natures child which is good (a bit similar) but you need the booster. The booster can be used for all sizes so it's not wasting money. whichever you like the look of I guess...
A rough guess for numbers, if you buy the eenees I have 2 nappies plus 2 extra pouches and you'll need 2 packs of the microfibre inserts. If you can afford it, I'd try to have 3 nappies and you can wash every second or third day (once they're over 6 months because I don't use it at night I only seem to change 4 times during the day). THey dry in about 10 minutes! I only wash them in a hot wash every second or third time. The only spills have been slight dampness that didn't bother baby and that has only happened once!

I should proof read...
I don't soak them or treat them differently. Just chuck them in the washing machine as I change him and put on the washing as usual. (I'd make sure there was no poo though!!)Lucky my boy is like clock work so I always have a liner when I know it's coming!
