Cows milk allergy

I'm just wondering if babies can develop a cows milk allergy after a few months, or if it is something that would be immediately obvious from birth?

I can't remember properly with my first Daughter, but I think she started getting really bad wind at around 4 months old and was writhing around in pain all night, screaming etc when she had been fine before that. Doctors told me she was fine and wouldn't help, so in the end we bought lactose free milk and there was an immediate difference. She never had wind again and was like a different baby overnight.

My 2nd Daughter had a bit of wind when she was little, but it cleared up pretty quickly. She is now 5 months old and suddenly has quite bad wind, writhing legs, always fussy and needs to be held (although could just be her temperament), crying quite a lot etc.

Don't know if a cows milk allergy can suddenly develop? I can't work out why she would suddenly get really bad wind at this age? Any advice welcome.

Ps meant to say both girls were formula fed

Any allergy can suddenly develop at any point in life. However as far as I know most babies allergic to cow's milk protein will make it obvious in their first few weeks after birth if on formula (sometimes breastmilk too). My son's issue was apparent from 8 days after birth.
Of course you could try the special milk with your second child and see if that makes a difference? Cmpa isn't the same as lactose intolerance though.

Thanks @surreygirl1987

Yes, I just realised I'd called it a Cows Milk allergy when actually it was a lactose issue with my eldest.

Think I will give the lactose free a go again and see if it makes any difference.

I thought that maybe with the cows milk allergy it might be apparent early on, and assumed it might have been the same with the lactose!

I'll do a bit of googling, and will probably just buy the milk!

Allergies can develop at any time. Lactose intolerance is very, very rare in babies and children but it does happen.
