Thicker poo - is this normal?

My DS used to poo once every two days. Recently he's become less frequent (going once every two days but sometimes once every three days) and his poo looks a bit thicker and less watery in its consistency than it used to be. He does strain a little bit when pooing but no more than usual really. He's FF and 4.5 months. Is this normal?

At 4.5 months they normally have around 1 per day. However there are so many factors that can effect it at that age.

If you have started weening or they are on thicker/anti-reflux milk it can result in mild constipation. Their body is just getting used to processing bulkier food.

He's on the exact same formula he's always been (Aptamil) - I haven't changed anything.

He's always gone once every two days but it's now become a bit less frequent...

I'd say his poos are more like the consistency of paste or peanut butter now, rather than more watery as they were before - and probably therefore harder for him to push out! According to this website peanut butter/paste is what they should be like though?!

Paste/peanut butter is a perfectly normal stage as they get older.

The 3 days between stools is above average, but it doesn't seem to be causing him much discomfort.

I would speak to your doctor but I don't think it's anything to worry about.

There's little point speaking to my doctor unfortunately as they're beyond useless Sad

According to Google, anything from daily to once every several days is normal, so I think I will wait and just keep an eye on him for now...

I know this thread is very old but what was the outcome of this? As my 4.5 month old is having the same issue!
