Get rid of dummy?

PinkDaydreams · 06/09/2020 14:15

Son is 2 years 8 months, he’s started putting the entire dummy in his mouth!! He’s teething though so I think he’s chewing on it.
Is it time to get rid of the dummy?
He’s speech delayed and suspected asd so hasn’t any understanding of dummy fairies etc.
I’m so torn as he loves his dummy and is such a good sleeper with it but at the same time he’s misbehaving with it! thanks all!

I would start by taking it off him during the day time.

If he has problems with speech, the sooner you get rid of it the better as it wont be helping.

There are sensory chew toys for children with autism which he might trade for the dummies. It sounds like he wants to chew rather than suck.

Thank you for your reply. He only has it during the day for his naps, sorry I should have said this

Following as I would like to take dummy for sleep off my 2 year old at some point too but no idea how !

PinkDaydreams · 06/09/2020 14:46

@BrokenLink he did have a teether but lost it, I wasn’t sure if he’s too old for a teether but maybe that’s the way forward?

Sensory chew toys are for children of all ages, they are not just for teething.

I took my dds dummy away during the day when she was roughly 18 months old and she turned 2 at the end of july so I wanted rid of it during the night as well. I jist went in hard and threw them both away so I had no option to change my mind. She was actually fine without it. She doesnt really nap during the day hut she could easily fall asleep in the car or sofa without her dummy so i knew she didn't need it really. Maybe try stopping it for day time sleeps and then once he's used to it go cold turkey and just bin them. You might have a few bad nights but it won't last long and it will be worth it in the long run

PinkDaydreams · 06/09/2020 16:59

I think I’ll try that, ditch them for the nap first, if he doesn’t nap then it’s not the end of the world.
I’ve ordered him a new teether too, thank you!
I’m nervous because he doesn’t have much understanding, so it’s not like I can even swap the dummies for a special new toy.

Gummee make a mallet for teething the big molars. Sounds like something he might like and it’s too big to fit in his mouth

That looks good thank you! Yes it’s his molars coming through, he’s only got two on the top to come through then that’s it he’s got all of his teeth. He’s been very chewy and dribbly lately so he must have one of them coming through but he won’t let me look!
