High temp, really worried!

Hi,

Very concerned about my DD. She is 10 months old and woke up with a very snotty nose. No temp. 3pm this afternoon had a temp of 38.1 so rung 111 and ended up with an emergency out of hrs appointment which I have just returned home from. The dr was very thorough and checked her ears, chest etc. He thinks it’s something viral but obviously said to immediately return if she began vomiting or developed a rash. Suggested keeping up with calpol and nurofen. When he checked her temp it was 39.1.
Obviously I will keep up with the medicine and also have some saline nasal spray for babies. I’m also going to sleep in her room tonight but I feel sick with worry that something will happen in the night. I suppose I’m just looking for some reassurance! I know babies do get poorly but it’s just awful.

It's so awful when they aren't themselves 🥺 I totally understand your concerns and sleeping in her room is the right thing to do but please don't be too hard on yourself and worry too much, she has seen a doctor who was happy it wasn't anything serious. Keep up with her medicine and I'm sure she will be absolutely fine. She will probably wake up tomorrow as of nothing has even been the matter! 😊

Must add, I have a 20 month old who has been to A&E/walk in centre 3 times with rashes and had us worried sick at the time so I totally get how you are feeling!

Is there something in particular that making you very anxious? I mean this kindly, she will get ill a lot over the coming years, more than likely some of it will be worse than now. She has a snotty nose and a temp, she will be fine. The temp is burning off the virus and is not dangerous unless in very rare circumstances. Please try to relax.

Thank you for your replies. I hope she does wake up tomorrow much better!
@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat I’m a bit of a worrier to be honest, it’s just my nature. She’s also never really been ill before, which I realise is lucky we’ve got to 10 months without anything. You are right that she will probably get more things in the coming years. I need to try to not be as stressed, I know!

I get it, I really do. I’m at the other end of things. I’ve suffered with anxiety forever about some things (never regarding their health though) and can say that certain parts of it have passed on to my children (now teens). Thankfully very minimal but I do see it and I wish I could change that. Good luck.

Hope baby is feeling okay. I know exactly how you feel. My baby is 6 months old and has been admitted 5 times with high temperatures. One was nearly 41. Its so frightening. I too suffer with a bit of anxiety. Hope all is well. Xx

@Couldntthinkofausername24
That must have been terrifying for you. I wish we could just take it away for them!
She had a very unsettled night and was exhausted this morning. Still has a high temperature but not as high as last night. Hope that’s a sign it’s on its way down!

Oh god yeah I was scared to death. A temperature over 39 can lead to those febrile convulsions which i believe are harmless but scary. Oh thats good that its coming down. The NHS website states its veey common for children to get high temperatures. Hope all is well today x
