How to keep baby safe??

My baby is nine months and he’s so gorgeous and happy and I love him so much. He’s a big boy (10.5kg) and he’s very strong and curious. At the moment he is always grabbing everything and he’s gotten hurt quite a few times lately. I have a playpen and have him in that quite a bit when I need to do things but even in there he’s lifted himself up and then fallen over and hit his head on the wooden playpen or plastic toy inside. He’s also got a walker but will get into everything in that and today pulled something very big and dangerous over onto himself. I keep thinking about it and feeling terrible. He has a rocker thing that says it’s suitable for newborn to toddler but he leaned so far forward in it that the whole thing flipped over and he got hurt on the hard floor. I love him so much and I feel so so bad about him getting hurt. I’m a single parent with an older child as well so I can’t hold him 24/7. What is a good device that he will be safe in? I was thinking one of those play areas that are like a walker but don’t move. I don’t know what to do.

You need to move anything big and heavy which he can pull on top of him out of it his way. Crawl around to find the dangers. The walkers you sit in are not safe. He will fall over and it’s normal.

Try a spin and sort activity center or something similar. Or a jumpthing that you attach to a door frame. And only put softer toys in the playpen. Then you need to baby proof the rooms he is zooming around in, so remove the coffee table, take stuff off the fronts of side tables, no table cloths, lamp cords behind the table or blocked with something etc etc

Yes I’ve just been reading a bit more about walkers and I don’t think I’ll put him in it anymore unless it’s for five minutes and I’m watching him the whole time. I just want something safe he can be happy in while I’m cleaning or working on the computer and I can leave the room for a few minutes to put things away or go to the bathroom

Thanks seatoski for the suggestions. I just don’t know if it’s actually possible to baby proof the whole house properly because we don’t have much space to store and move things into. I’ve done a few things like making sure electric cords aren’t in his reach that he could pull on and bring something down on his head. I’ll definitely have to get a nice activity centre I think

What I did, OP, was baby-proof one room (book-cases nailed to the wall, no ornaments they could reach etc) and then put a baby gate on the door.

Jumperoo? There's loads on FB marketplace.

Kids that age do just get a few bumps. But just make sure any majorly dangerous things are out the way. Books cases and tv secured to the wall. Stair gates. No furniture near windows etc.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I’ve got a tv strap just need a chance to put it on and I do have a jolly jumper which he loves but apparently it’s not very good for them to be in for too long. Our house is fairly small and it’s got an open plan lounge/dining/kitchen area so it’s hard to keep him out of certain areas. He’s starting to get very interested in the kitchen cupboards so I think I’ll have to see about a baby gate cupboard locks. It’s hard because I know being on the floor and being able to crawl and sit is best for their development but he’s into everything. I’m just going to have to start being much more careful and maybe let him whinge in his high chair a bit if I have a quick job I really need to do

Baby proof his room (which will need doing for when the sides come off his cot anyway), put a stair gate on the door. Any upstairs jobs he is plonked on his side of the babygate with a few toys.

Downstairs jobs - clip him in the high chair and give him something safe to gnaw at

Might also be a good idea to baby proof all but one of the kitchen cupboards. In that one, put things like Tupperware, some plastic spoons, stacking beakers etc. So he actually gets the fun of ransacking the cupboard but it's all his stuff.

Imtootired · 05/09/2020 16:43

Thank you that’s a great idea about the kitchen cupboards!
