Is a 4 month old baby considered a newborn?

And if not, when does a newborn become not a newborn but a baby?

Am asking as I referred to my 4 month old as a newborn and a friend commented that he’s not really a newborn anymore.

I think they technically stop being a newborn at 12 weeks. I wondered the same thing and researched it, and that was the answer I got. Unsure of how accurate it is though.

Lockdownseperation · 05/09/2020 07:49

I would say new born goes to the max of 12 weeks

Up to 1 year - baby
Up to 3 yrs - toddler, although from 2.5 yrs they are neither toddler or preschooler
Up to 4 yrs - preschooler
And then just child

Nah newborn is up to about 6 weeks IMO. When they're still all scrunched up and hardly open their eyes.

I agree up to about 12 weeks. They start doing a bit more from 4 months

I agree with your friend & would consider the first 8 weeks a newborn. But don't understand why your friend felt the need to say something.

Thanks. 12 weeks makes sense actually, as that’s the time referred to as the 4th trimester I believe.

Up to 1 year - baby

So a baby becomes a toddler at 1 year old? I thought a baby was a baby until 2!

Totally unscientific but in my mind they become toddlers when they start toddling about. So around a year for most!

BikeRunSki · 05/09/2020 08:05

I agree that a”toddler” has to be toddling!
I always thought newborn op to about 4-6 weeks.

Lockdownseperation · 05/09/2020 08:05

Toddler is a child who toddles around, as in walks like a very drunk adult. For most children this is about 1.

I would say so too. But some babies start walking at 9 months (my second is going that way 😳) so they would be a toddler but also definitely still a baby. It doesnt really matter though
DeborahAlisonphillipa · 05/09/2020 08:22

I stop thinking of them as newborn at 6-8 weeks and I think medically, a newborn/neonate cut off is earlier still. They are still a young baby though. I think they’re a baby/infant until they’re a toddler which is another fuzzy phrase. And may I introduce the word tweenie in nursery when they’re not a baby but not ready for toddler room? Then there is “preschooler”. All very confusing.

What context did you use it in? Has her reaction bothered you?

No, hasn’t bothered me at all - just got me thinking!

@KitKatastrophe DD2 took her first steps in the day she turned 9 months. I still thought of her as a baby until she turned 1 yrs although she wasn’t really as she is physically developing so fast compared to her older sister.

KitKatastrophe · 05/09/2020 09:04

@Lockdownseperation I think mine will be the same. She rolled both ways from 12 weeks and is 5.5 months now and not far off crawling. Apparently I was walking at 9 months so maybe she will take after me.

trotesio · 05/09/2020 09:30

There is nothing 'newborn' about a 4 month old.

0-6 weeks: newborn
6 weeks - 1 year: baby
1-2 years: toddler
3-4 years: preschooler

Caspianberg · 05/09/2020 09:40

I have a 4 month old and he’s definitely not newborn anymore. He’s rolling across the living room floor, sitting up with help and babbling away

I think the first 6 weeks maybe

newmum234 · 05/09/2020 11:04

Just googled and found this:

In medical contexts, newborn or neonate (from Latin, neonatus, newborn) refers to an infant in the first 28 days after birth

4 weeks is the cut off for newborn. 1-9 months I would describe them as a baby but my DS is 9 months and cruising / walking so everybody else is calling him a toddler.
MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 05/09/2020 18:44

I think it’s an infant after about 8 weeks
