Getting baby weighed

Hi,

Due to lockdown the Health Visitor has only ever visited my home. The last time she visited was when my baby has just turned 8 weeks which is when he was last weighed. He's 11 weeks now and grown drastically that I don't think the formula feeds I give him are appropriate anymore. He's on Nutramigen for suspected dairy intolerance and on the tin it says 4 7oz feeds over 24 hours for a baby over 14Ibs. When I spoke to the doctor 2 weeks ago, he suggested 5-6 4oz feeds but that's just not doing anymore as he was basing that on his weight at 8 weeks which was 12Ibs 14oz. I was just wondering where I can go to get him weighed? I feel like everywhere is shut due to lockdown. Thanks x

This might be a crazy suggestion, but could you order your own baby scale? My friend just bought one on Amazon so she doesn't have to go to the hospital for weigh-ins. It cost $30 I think (so around £25). I'm in the US so can't help with any local knowledge but I remember how worried I was about my baby's weight and when my friend told me about the scale I thought it was a genius idea! Anyway I hope you work it out one way or another.

Also just my two cents worth - you know your own baby and if you think he needs more milk you're probably right. But I'm not a doctor or anything.

Don’t worry about what the time says, your baby certainly hasn’t read it Wink

Feed baby on demand when he’s showing his hunger cues. Baby-les is much better rather than trying to stick to a certain amount each day.

As long as as he’s gaining weight (which you’ll feel, rather than weighing) alert, plenty of wet and dirty nappies all is well.

I don’t think weighing clinics will be opening up again anytime soon tbh. But you can always weigh yourself and step on a scale with him to calculate if you’re really worried.

I'm weighing my DD by stranding on bathroom scales with and then without her, and comparing the two. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but it's good enough.

Hi all, thanks for the replies! I should note the reason I'm following the doctors advice on how much to give him is if I give him too much then he starts projectile vomiting so I want to make sure he's well fed but not too well fed Smile

Bless him! Have a look at ‘paced feeding’ - it’s a more natural way to bottle feed, so baby takes as much as they need. It really helped Dd not chuck up her feeds when she guzzled them down.

Takes longer, but it really helps and there’s some great benefits to it.

We had to do daily weigh-ins at one point. We ordered a baby scale. It was just easier.

Grodesperate · 05/09/2020 04:07

We're weighing dd in a roasting tin (lined with a towel) balanced on the kitchen scales Grin

In my area you can also bring baby to the good for weighing - could you call them and ask?

Good = gp

I bought £20 scales from amazon. I found weighing myself with and without baby awfully inaccurate.

We are weighing ours with luggage scales we had. Put baby in large Muslin cloth with knot at top and lift up with the scales. Been fairly good so far. ( we do it over the bed incase our knot fails!)

With formula feeds you should feed when they cue. Babies should decide when to stop feeding so there so always be milk left in the bottle. If they empty the bottle then you need to make them more milk.

Oh dear, I didn’t realise that @Lockdownseperation - and my DS has been draining the bottle recently! I feed him 210mls at a time and thought that was enough for one feed. He’s getting between 800-1000mls per day.

I phoned my health visitor and asked about weighing clinics. My son has been given a time slot for one, but you need a clinical need to get slot. The weigh clinics are usually being run for babies who are struggling to gain weight. I got a slot for my hefty 5 month old as he was put on a healthy weight pathway at birth due to being a massive chunk.

If you've got bathroom scales you could weigh yourself and then weigh again while holding your baby.
