Dull alert...clothes, how do you sort?

Dd is approaching 2. So far I have sat one Sunday each "stage" packed away her clothes, vacuum bagged them and got out the next size.

What do you all do moving forward? So she in theory goes into 2-3 soon. Do you bundle those for birthday and or Christmas? Do you still do a mass switch over? Or sort of introduce in dribs and drabs.

We don't have loads of room, I'm due baby December and trying to organise the chaos. At the moment she's mainly in 18 to 24 but a few 12 to 18. So those will end up in wrong storage bags.

I've collected lots of bundles of second hand so next stage are ready just not sure how best to tackle it. Any tips?

I was cross with myself as was checking what I might still need and had missed a load which have now been unworn and are to small. Trying to avoid this.

Think I may be making a right muddle of it all!! Wish I changed my clothes every year.

I only ever bought what I needed. Ordered and it was usually here next day. So when things get tight or season changes, order a few new things but only ever just what I needed. When things no longer fit or aren't cool/warm enough, they get shoved in a bin liner in the closet. I might sort through that once every year or two (mainly if we have to move) to bin things or give to charity. I have a boy and a girl, so not much was used a second time after baby stage, and I hate having extra stuff around. But there is no logic to it. I order more if I need it and I shove it in the cupboard when I don't.

I tend to buy things as and when rather than in bulk, and I pack clothes by season rather than size.

When something is outgrown I put it into either a summer storage bag or winter storage bag (now DC are older, outgrown clothes from dc1 tend to go straight to DC2 without needing to be put away in between).

At the end of the summer/winter I pack all the seasonal clothes away together in a big storage bag.
When I get them out again, I get Dc to try them all on, remove anything that doesn't fit, and buy a replacement if necessary.

As the Dc have got older, I've sometimes got a couple of years wear out of things.

Some clothes don't get packed away for the season - stuff like t shirts or underwear. If I feel something has got too small, I remove it, but otherwise it stays, regardless of the size label.

I buy as we go now - my DD gets through tops quicker than bottoms so we've got a mix of sizing on the go. I put notes in with all the storage bags to say what's in them and what size so I see without having to open up the bags so "winter coats size 18mo - 2yo, trousers 12-18 months, tops 18mo - 2yo". It's not perfect but I'm too pregnant to get up the loft to sort them out at the moment!

You are bagging up for the next child?

Then if current child is in mainly 18-24 but some 12-18, put those 12-18s in with the 18-24 bundles as presumably those clothes are 'large' for their size.

I have 5 years between mine, didn't do the baby stage (adopted). I decided I couldn't keep 5 years worth of clothes so only kept certain things. I kept them in a small chest and just kept an ongoing list that I added to when new clothes added, and crossed out when clothes removed for DD2 to wear. However it was brilliant needing a coat or party clothes or trousers and just being able to get them out of the chest rather than buy them. Smile

I think you're hugely over complicating it. When I notice clothes were getting to tight I relegate them to a box in the wardrobe and order replacements in a bigger size.

In terms of organising for next baby, I supposed id dive into said box and see what can be used again and what cant. Then id just get rid of the stuff I wasnt going to use again.

icedaisy · 03/09/2020 13:05

Oh yes, I'm an over complicater for sure.

I just seem to have bags everywhere, not much room, and soon two under two.

Anxious by nature and I suppose the thought of a bag with multiple sizes fills me with dread. But yes good point that if still in a size now must be bigger.

Quite like the season idea but we are rural Scotland so don't really have seasons just cold and wet.

Also was given a lot of vouchers so have been quite carful with those. Shopped sales last year for this winters stuff etc to make them go as far as possible. So I have next size coming up ready together with any bundles I've picked up. It's just all got a bit chaotic.

Just put outgrown clothes into a drawer u til there are enough worth bagging, then bag with little notes "summer clothes, 18-24months" or whatever. Store these u der the bed or wherever.
Stop buying in advance if you haven't got the storage, just buy what you need as you go.
Don't be surprised if you end up using far fewer of the hand me downs than you plan, they come along in different sexes / shapes / seasons just to bugger up your plans Wink

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 03/09/2020 13:31

Also - I get quite a few bits from Little Foxys Preloved - littlefoxysprelovedclothes.co.uk

Quite cheap and some good pieces I think.

icedaisy · 03/09/2020 14:48

Ha! Yes re hand me downs. Then there was the elderly lovely aunty who bought all Christmas baby grows and outfits, age 6 to 9 months, for a Christmas baby. Gah!

Oh not seen that site will check it out thank you.

DD gets hot very easily despite it being cold a lot of the time, so I tend to buy her clothes in the next size up (currently 9-12 months and she's 8 months in a few days) and go for items she can layer. I have max 5 sleepsuits for her to wear at night, during the day she'll wear a babygro with either shorts or leggings, or neither if it's hot. I buy separate bottoms for her since her thighs are quite chunky and out grows clothing before her top half does. Once she out grows them all, they're gone.
