Reuseable nappies

Hi,

I like the idea of trying reuseable nappies but there seems to be so many brands and different options, it's very confusing!

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I think different brands work for different shape children and different lifestyles so don't invest in a whole set until you're sure they work for you!
I personally use pocket nappies (mostly Alva, Little's and blooms. And a few BumGenius) because they are quick drying, you can adjust the absorbency and when stuffed they are super easy for anyone to use (grandparents, dh, nursery etc) I have a few all in ones but don't find them as absorbent. I love the bamboo nappies with a wrap for nighttime (little lamb/lollipop with a blueberry Capri wrap over the top) because they're far more absorbent, but they're a bit of a faff for every change (in my opinion - some people love them). They also take longer to dry.

Another vote for mixing types, so much depends on baby, plans for the day etc. You may have a local nappy library who will lend some, or pick up some second hand before you buy a whole stash new. Start with a dozen or so, enough for one wash, and go part time until you get into the swing of it and find what works for you.

The Nappy Lady website has lots of really good advice - she does kits you can hire so you don't have to commit. Also try and find your nearest nappy library so you can get free advice and try different kinds out.

There are basically three main types of system: pocket nappies (easy but not the most absorbent); all-in-ones (again easy but can take time to dry); and a two-part system with nappy underneath and wrap over the top (a bit of a faff but the most absorbent).

We use pocket nappies for the day time with 2 bamboo inserts. For overnight we use a two-part system because pocket nappies really don't have the absorbency required for nights.

I buy most of mine second hand on the Facebook sites (Cloth Bum Mums is my favourite but there are others). There is a very brisk trade in them and some makes really hold their value so even if you buy brand new, you can get a lot of that back in the end.

Join the nappy lady on Facebook and ask her for recommendations via her website. I'd also try to find a local nappy library to try out several different kinds.

Thanks everyone - that's very helpful
