My LO has reflux, wasn't terribly bad he wasn't in pain but was sick a good bit. He was BF and the doctor gave me ranitidine so you could ask for this from your GP? I will say though what looks like half a bottle night not actually be when they are sick x

My sympathies as we were the same as you.

We tried everything (14 years ago) such as baby Gaviscon, orizepon/al? (Sorry cant recall exact name) We were in despair and our son writhing in agony, in and out of hospital appointments.

In the end, after lots of research by me, we created thickshakes with scoops of milk thickener, Carobel in formula (Nutramigen) (I believe these days you can buy a special mix of Carobel). It took about an hour to dtink. Bear in mind he had a twin, so this was time consuming, but it was like a light bulb moment. He kept the milk down and no projectile vomiting or pain. I hope it might work for you.

Good luck.

Reminded of ranitidine - we had tried that too to no avail.

Have you tried Omeprazole? (Prescription )

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 31/08/2020 19:07

I'd second Omeprazole from the GP. DD was writhing in agony before. It's stopped the acidity that was burning her and has lessened the amount she is being sick.

JaJaDingDong · 31/08/2020 19:23

DD2 was sick after every feed for the first few weeks of her life, and lost quite a bit of weight. We tried everything, but what worked best was just putting her down very carefully after a feed without winding her or jiggling her at all. We sorry of propped her up on the sofa.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 31/08/2020 21:03

Has anyone reviewed his feeding - technique, quantity, frequency etc? Paced bottle feeding is a good place to start. Easy to google. Reflux really needs a paediatric review. Can you look into this?

momtoboys · 31/08/2020 21:30

One of my sons had awful reflux too. We would give him a daily dose of Zantac and it helped a little. We finally as a last ditch effort switched formula brands and it made things so much better. I don't know if it was the consistency or the ingredients but it made all the difference. And it wasn't one of the really expensive specialized formulas luckily, it was just another brand of the same type of formula.

Hope you find something that works.

grey12 · 31/08/2020 21:38

DD1 had some really thick formula for a little bit. I'm sure you can find it at a pharmacy. Read the instructions well cause usually it requires a more open teet.

Good luck! Thanks

I have had 3 little ones with reflux, anti-reflux milk worked for all of them.

The only problem with thicker milk is it can cause constipation if they are very young and you don't want to swap one problem for the other.

The doctor advised we use lactulose, but we only needed the tiniest amount (0.5ml) just every couple of days to take the edge off the constipation if they had it.

BluebellsGreenbells · 31/08/2020 23:59

Are you keeping him upright after each feed?
Do you have the cot raised slightly head above stomach - helps with acid reflux

AriettyHomily · 01/09/2020 00:05

You need to go back for an omeprazole prescription. Upright for half an hour after every feed. Cot wedge. Tilt the pram up. Swirl the formula don't shake. dose the omeprazole about 45 minutes before a feed. Continue with the gaviscon.

Glastonbury2020 · 01/09/2020 00:08

DS had such bad reflux and projectile vomiting after every feed, that I couldn't even feed him in friends' houses. I would sit in the garden, even in Winter, in case he got sick, which he always did.
Tried every medication and sleeping position to no avail. I was on the verge of PND as a result, so I feel your pain.
He grew out of it after 6 months or so- once he could sit up unaided.

Advicewouldbeappreciated · 01/09/2020 00:11

This can be a sign of cows milk protein allergy which is rare but if reflux does not subside is can he a symptom. A GP can trial a non-cows milk protein milk to see if this relieves symptoms which then confirms the diagnosis.
Otherwise tilting the cot so babys head is higher than tummy can be helpful.

@Advicewouldbeappreciated had a good idea. It could be allergy!

These formulas (reflux and lactose free) should be available at the pharmacy. You can try them.

grey12 · 01/09/2020 17:49

Boots website does both of them of 2 different brands ;)

Good luck. The omeprazole didn't work for us unfortunately. His reflux was quite severe and it is just awful watching them writhe in agony for weeks and weeks.

The Nutramigen was lactose free so the double whammy with thickener worked - we were lucky then not to experience constipation.
