Weaning

I'm wanting to start weaning today, yes I am starting before 6 months as my girl is 100% ready for food! I'm not sure what to start with though? I know the jars you can buy in supermarkets (my first bolognese and things like that) say 4-6 months on them so could I start with that straight away around lunch time ? Or would it be better to do the baby porridge stuff first??

OP, if it helps at all to get a sense of where other people are at, I'm currently seeing weaning preparation in terms of 'homework' I need to get done in order to get ready, in addition to watching for signs of readiness in my baby. My plan essentially is:

  • Get the highchair and other stuff baby will need (bibs, spoons, beakers etc). IKEA deliveries are taking a while at the moment so the highchair isn't arriving for another couple of weeks and then I'd like him to have a chance to get used to sitting in it before we get to the eating part!
  • Get kitchen stuff I need, like a bamboo steamer and a little blender of some sort.
  • Stock up on ingredients I wouldn't normally use myself - in my case that's mostly very low-salt versions of things like stock cubes, peanut butter etc.
  • Get really confident on spotting the difference between gagging and choking, and what to do in the event of choking. If it were to happen, I'd rather not have to stop and Google it at the time!
  • Have a proper look through the baby cookbooks I've got, to see what's likely to be suitable (texturally, in particular) at the point we get going, and consider how I might be able to make meals for me that also work with that.
  • Maybe get a couple of veg sorted and in the freezer in puréed/mashed portions, to take the pressure off when we get going.

I'm doing that stuff over several weeks because I'd just rather ease into it, personally. Obviously totally up to you what pace you approach all that stuff at, though!

@Persipan I wouldn’t spend too much time purée stuff as most babies generally prefer their finger food.

No, I'm not going to go mad with it... But maybe some fruit purees that could be mixed with yogurt, or veg to form the basis of a pasta sauce. That sort of thing. I love cooking but it's just me, and working around the baby I have only just about got back to being able to cook and then immediately eat the thing (rather than pre-prep stuff to eat later) so I'm a bit paranoid about having to start doing a load more of it all at once!
