Child first steps

Hi,
I know every child is different and will walk when they are ready but, I just cant help feeling a little stressed my 14 month old isn't walking.
She started crawling at 10 months which is considered 'late' she is such a happy little thing and really bright, seems so aware and trying to copy all the time
When it comes to walking she just doesnt want to at all lol, we have walk alongs, trucks to hold on and she just doesn't want to try.
Shes a really fast crawler and I think she gets to where she needs so fast she isn't needing to walk, we've tried to hold something she really likes and she crawls to get it.
She stands in the middle of the floor not holding on and her balance is really good, I guess I just want to know when peoples children took their first steps?.
Did you have to encourage it or just leave them until they are ready, I cant help but feel lazy for not trying to encourage it more. I just dont want to over do it.
Thanks

Both of mine were 16 months.

Disappointedkoala · 30/08/2020 17:25

16 months after being an early crawler.

weegiemum · 30/08/2020 17:28

Mine were 18 months, 15 months and 13 months.

We just let them get on with it when they were ready. None of them really did the staggering about thing, just walked in a pretty competent way once they were ready. With ds I was really worried as I was getting more and more pregnant and I was really ill in pregnancy and spent a lot of time in hospital, and then one day he just picked up a toy and walked right up the ward! Dd2 ran on her tiptoes the first time!

Mine were 22 months and 24 months, both are totally fine normal human beings now (well, mostly normal Wink) aged 3 & 6.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/08/2020 17:36

DD2 crawled at 5 months, cruised at 6 months... And walked at 13 months. No interest in walking when she could everything she needed to on all fours!

Hollyhead · 30/08/2020 17:38

Mine walked at 18 months, was considered totally normal.

Sally7645 · 30/08/2020 17:40

18 months here too... she didn't even sit up independently until 10 months. Crawled a bit around 12 months but quickly learnt to cruise around the edges of furniture instead

Now at 2 years, she doesn't sit still, is running around and keeping up with her friends. Don't fret one day they just get up and go

UncleMatthewsEntrenchingTool · 30/08/2020 17:43

18 months here. She starts at a super selective grammar next week. They do things in their own time, she’ll do it when she’s ready.

Quacks2020 · 30/08/2020 17:45

@weegiemum running on her tip toes made me laugh.
There are lots of kids in our family and ALL walked before they were one so it's so nice hearing its actually very normal to walk months after first birthday.
Sounds like they all just got up and walked. Just reassuring to read not much you can do about it, just when they are ready

Yep mine was about 16m, also crawled late (11 months). I too was worried at the time but she got there. One of the others in my NCT group was later still. Try not to worry OP.

mrsmummy1111 · 30/08/2020 17:53

I wrote a similar thread not that long ago about my 15 month old. He also crawled at 10 months and was SUCH a fast crawler that he just didn't even try to walk as he got everywhere he needed on all fours. I tried to encourage him to use a walker, wasn't interested. Used to try and get him to walk holding our hands - again wasn't interested, just sat on his bum and crawled off.

2 weeks after that post (a week before 16 months) he just let go of the sofa and took about 6/7 steps, just like that. That was 2 weeks ago and he's gaining confidence every day.

I guess my point is that every baby gets there eventually, and I think sometimes they do it when you least expect it. I truthfully thought he was nowhere near but he just needed that time to gain confidence. We didn't encourage him in the end as we gave up and just thought he'll get there when he's ready.

Is he free standing yet?? It was about a month after he first stood up without holding onto anything that he took his first steps.

Quacks2020 · 30/08/2020 17:54

It seems to be the only question people ask. I get asked over and over "is she walking yet" so it makes me worry shes behind.
Also why do they call it the terrible twos when I believe they definitely hit at 1 years of age Wink

Also out of our NCT group there are 9 babies and only 3 are walking. One walked at 11 months, the other at 14 months and my son at 15 months. The rest are all 15/16 months and none are close to walking.

Quacks2020 · 30/08/2020 17:56

@mrsmummy1111
That's so nice to hear, I feel the same that she is nowhere near.
Yes she finds it really funny crawling into the middle of the room and standing up without nothing, stands for 30 seconds, laughs, sits down and crawls away.

Yep DS did EXACTLY that and my mum said he's done it the wrong way round 🤣 normally they let go of furniture then once they're walking they stand up without pulling themselves up, but DS would be on all 4's then kinda squat and stand up. But if I tried to encourage him to come to me, he would get too excited and sit down and crawl to me!

It may seem like she's nowhere near but she just needs a bit of confidence to take that first step. If she can stand up confidently then she has the balance, she just needs to take off. I think it'll be sooner than you think

Lazypuppy · 30/08/2020 18:27

My dd didn't crawl till 14 months then walked at 16 months.

Honestly its so much easier when they can't move Grin they all get there in their own time

firstimemamma · 30/08/2020 18:30

18 months and it didn't even occur to me to be remotely bothered. 2 now and never stops running around! They get there when they get there Smile

DramaAlpaca · 30/08/2020 18:34

It sounds like she's almost ready if she's standing steadily. She'll do it when she's ready. 14 months isn't late, it's within normal range so I wouldn't worry. I reckon she'll be off and running very soon.

firstimemamma · 30/08/2020 18:36

My friend didn't walk at all until 2 and she's a very successful 25 year old now.

grandmasterstitch · 30/08/2020 18:37

Mine was 2 and a month before he walked. Try not to worry, it's completely normal for them not to be walking at 14 months. DS wasn't moving at all at that age and now he's a totally normal 2 and a half year old

Lolalovesmarmite · 30/08/2020 18:56

My DD crawled at 7 months and then didn’t walk until 13 months. She was such a fast crawler she didn’t bother about walking for ages.

SamK93 · 30/08/2020 18:59

Both of mine didn't crawl until 9/10 months and they both didn't take their first steps until 15 months! I had everyone constantly comparing their children to mine, it upset me at the time but now pregnant with the third and first two are aged 8 and 4 I know all babies do things at their own pace!

BertieBotts · 30/08/2020 19:09

14 months is on the younger side for walking, it's anywhere between 12-18 months normally. You don't need to be worrying yet.

Quacks2020 · 30/08/2020 19:30

@mrsmummy1111
My dd is exactly the same! Squats and then stands. She has a weird fascination with batteries so I hold them up to try and get her to walk and she crawls really fast.
Hopefully it will not be as long as I think. I have sciatica and she's really heavy
